Carrying out their orders are the Horsemen, Nephilim (powerful beings spawned from the unnatural union of angels and demons) who have pledged themselves to the Council and been granted immense power.

However, this power came at a tragic cost: the Horsemen were ordered to use their newfound strength to wipe out the rest of their kind. What followed was a bloody battle on Eden where the Horsemen, obeying the will of the Council, annihilated the Nephilim.

Darksiders: Genesis is an action/adventure that tears its way through hordes of demons, angels, and everything in-between on its way to Hell and back with guns blazing and swords swinging. Genesis gives players their first look at the world of Darksiders before the events of the original game, as well as introduces the horseman Strife.

The Darksiders universe has always been an intriguing one, filled with larger-than-life characters, a deep, if not slightly confusing storyline and a glorious aesthetic that seems to come straight off of a 70’s prog-metal album cover. Genesis may position itself as merely a side story; just a small alternative look at one part of this universe. But it is so much more than that. It offers a more personal story and one that may seem insignificant at first, but has wider implications to the story as a whole. Tied to that is gameplay that is both fun and chaotic in equal measure and offers replay value to those who want to go back again and again.

Darksiders: Genesis redeems the series after the disappointment of the 3rd entry last year. It manages to capture the essence that makes Darksiders what it is, while transposing it in to a new genre. Top quality action, over the top powers and spectacle and a fun core loop that provides challenge without too much frustration. Removing the series staple platforming wouldn’t have hurt, and at times solo play can be a little bit attritional, but overall you’d be hard pressed not to have a good time with Genesis.

Darksiders Genesis comes prepared to give a lot of war in its fight without quarter to restore the balance.

We really liked the new direction Airship Syndicate gave the IP and we hope that the next title in the series will be quite similar to Darksiders Genesis.

Whereas Darksiders III missed the mark by straying too far from the path, Darksiders Genesis on Xbox One proves that the formula from the first two games was successful enough for their franchise. It’s true that this is a more linear experience this time around, but none of what made Darksiders a cult hit in the first place has been sacrificed in translation.

Darksiders Genesis manages to maintain the spirit of the franchise despite the change in perspective. It's fun and has an incredible artistic section, although it is hampered by certain performance issues.

Darksiders Genesis shows us another side of the Darksiders franchise. And even if that side isn’t perfect, it’s definitely good early-2020 fun.

It's true, the game is much different than (for example) Darksiders 3. Many would expect as challenging and Souls-like experience after DS3. Puzzles are not that great, but it's still Darksiders and it is great game. It's different, but it's not that hard to find similarities. It plays well, very smooth, visuals are better than any DS game ever made. It's very cheap for the given content, and let's not forget about co-op. It's great thing. It's one of my favourites games and i still have 3 chapters to finish from main story, and many more arenas (and I do enjoy them a lot). Expand

I really liked the original Darksider games and I love ARPGs and was expecting this to be good, but unfortunately it's not. Many standard features that I've come to expect in an ARPG such as a minimap are missing. The camera angles are awkward, the platforming puzzles are bad and I'm often confused about what I need to do next. The story, progression and combat are all underwhelming. Expand

    2/25/21-5/28/21 10hrs. 100% Story

This game was truly disappointing in every possible way. The other Darksiders games introduced us to an incredible universe that was continued in books and comics in such a way that there were still so many corners to explore and lore to expand. This game is not what anyone wanted at all.

The story follows the Horsemen War and Strife as they try to uncover a dastardly plot enacted by Lucifer. Mostly they just run errands for characters that are well established liars. You'll find yourself visiting several new and exciting locations (which you'll barely see considering the camera-more on that later) finding an artifact...or finding a different artifact...or killing three things to get to...an artifact. But wait! The monotony is broken up by boss battles that usually make no sense to the story.

I will absolutely stand behind the characters, though. War is still a bit boring, but Strife brings such a cool element to the gang. He may be just a bargain bin Deadpool, but he does have some genuinely funny lines and it is really cool that you have a horseman that doesn't just hack away at everything.

It makes it so much worse that he debuted in this type of game. Strife could have had an amazing outing in a third person shooter. Instead, because of the isometric camera and terrible controls, I wound up mostly favoring War (the boring one) because Strife couldn't survive long enough to do any damage.

The game also throws so many junk enemies at you that you will really get sick of the combat. It's the type of game that will make you sigh every time you see another group of fifteen goblins in your way. Even on Casual, it seems like every enemy takes just a bit to long to cut through. Enough that you never really feel like you're getting anywhere by leveling up.

The leveling system had some promise. It's kind of like the Witcher 3-adding bonuses based on which demon orb goes where. But even maxed out, a 5% bonus isn't really worth grinding for. And all of Strife's ammo is limited, which means you can't use those cool modifiers very much.

The whole game just feels very cheap. Not just the cheap player deaths, but the cutscenes look like they just colored in the storyboard images and said “good enough!”. I get that it was a design choice, it just always feels lazy to me when games do comic-style cutscenes.

And speaking of lazy and cheap-the isometric camera! In a game universe with such rich environments, who's idea was it to only show you a top down view? Try solving a puzzle while you can only see five feet in front of the character. What is the point in being able to summon a horse if you can't see where you are going? Don't even get me started on the platforming!

All of this on top of the fact that the game completely froze three or four times! And you have to press A after every line of dialogue!

From a series that I love so much, this game has let me down in a huge way. It could have been truly amazing, but instead it's one of the worst games I have ever forced myself to sit through.
