Extinction lacks refinement and complexity, that much goes without saying. However, for those that seek a non-stop action-packed hack-and-slash adventure, there’s a lot to look forward to within. It may be repetitive in the long run, but there’s no denying that Extinction offers a decent story, empowering gameplay and enough content to merit a recommendation.

Extinction is a well polished title set in a universe that has an interesting story. It always feels brilliant taking down a huge green beast, but it does get a bit tiring after a while; there really does need to be something else to the game’s bag of tricks to keep the interest high. It doesn’t help that Extinction comes in as a full priced game, and if it had some in around the £20-£30 price range, it would have felt much more at home.

While there’s joy to be found in decapitating a seemingly-endless army of building-sized beasts that put up an immense fight, Extinction sadly never delivers a true killing blow in any one area, just a bunch of solid strikes with some notable misses.

Extinction is the fearsome Giant that stumbles over your expectations and shatters them. Its careful aesthetics and its original design are languished in the face of flat and uncharismatic missions. Its frantic gameplay collides with design flaws and leaves this third attempt by Iron Galaxy in a simple try.

Extinction isn't what it could have been. The story is a complete afterthought but in its throwback sort of way, it doesn't feel out of place. Frequent camera problems get in the way of battling the Ravenii, and overall Extinction fails to deliver on the one thing it must get right, its man versus beast moments. They might be giants, but they're definitely boring.

While not an awful game, this is definitely not something I’m going to be overtly suggesting to my friends. The game is made up of a simple kind of fun and not any sort of deep and meaningful systems or mechanics. Topped off with a generic and negligible story, Extinction only manages to keep its head above water due to how fun chopping up ogres can be.

Extinction shows a lot of promise, and it sometimes delivers, like when it comes to the engaging, acrobatic combat or the sheer scale of the Ravenii. Unfortunately, the repetitive mission types and gameplay and a clichéd fantasy tale make it feel like a shell of a game. Far from feeling like a full retail release, Extinction feels like one good idea run into the ground until you’re checking your watch, waiting for it to end.
  8. Apr 10, 2018
One look at Extinction’s artwork may conjure thoughts of Shadow of the Colossus and Attack on Titan. While attaining the scale of these games, it doesn’t succeed in delivering the awe factor of engaging a new giant. They all look the same and you know what you need to do to drop them. Extinction ends up being shallow, repetitive, frustrating, and little more.

Great art direction and smooth combat show a desire to do well. Although the overall lack of control and the redundant experience can't save Extinction.
  10. Apr 20, 2018
Extinction is a game that feels like a novel idea that didn’t get fully fleshed out. I wanted to love it, but the repetition really drags it down. At a lower price or with a little more variety to the encounters this game could have been something special. As it stands though it is nigh impossible to recommend it.
  11. Apr 11, 2018
Extinction offers an interesting premise, but if feels underdeveloped in all its areas: story, gameplay, level design, graphics. The result is a boring and forgettable action game.
  12. Apr 10, 2018
A fine idea at its heart, Extinction ultimately falls flat on its arse thanks to a dearth of interesting objectives and gameplay sorely lacking in variety. Chucking in loads of content clearly isn't the answer when you're doing the same damn thing over and over again.
  13. Apr 10, 2018
Some will relish the gruesome spectacle and challenge, but Execution manages to transform giant-slaying into something of a chore.
  14. Apr 30, 2018
The core idea sounds fun and with a bit more polish and deepening of the Campaign Extinction could’ve been a pretty decent action-adventure hack-and-slash. As it is, it’s a poorly executed homage of far better games which, in all honesty, are far more worthy of your time.
  15. Apr 19, 2018
Though it's fun for the first few hours, Extinction ultimately offers a dull and repetitive experience that fails to compare to the game it was inspired by.
  16. Apr 10, 2018
Extinction is a game that presents serious problems in its gameplay due to the continuous drops in the frame rate, the content is scarce and becomes repetitive.
  17. Apr 9, 2018
Extinction shoots itself in the foot time and time again. It's so frustrating to see its good ideas buried under repetitive missions, a forgettable story, and embarrassing production values for its AAA price.

A poorly polished, poorly realised and remarkably underwhelming action game. [June 2018, p.82]

This is an absolute horror show of a game and I cannot recommend anybody buy it or even accept it for free.

Unfortunately though the game has too many problems and whilst it does have quite a few good points as well it never reaches its full potential because certain issues hold it back quite considerably. When it comes to the combat though I think they get this aspect of the game spot on. The enemies that you come across have lots of variety going for them and tackling them can be a huge amount of fun. I think the main reason why tackling enemies was fun is because the combat elements in the game feel like they pack a punch and because of this taking down an enemy can be extremely satisfying. Unfortunately the world in which the combat takes place is a little on the bland side and in my opinion it just doesn’t feel alive and that does make exploring a little boring. Another reason why the world doesn’t come alive is because the missions that are present in the world are very repetetive and they grow stale quite quickly which means tackling them can feel like a chore a lot of the time. Thankfully though the missions do have a decent story that accompany them and this did make me want to carry on with them but it didn’t hide all of the problems. The most annoying problems that persist are the technichal issues the game suffers with and these issues never seem to go away. They try to keep the frustration levels down by offering a decent difficulty curve but you forget about this quite quickly because the technichal side of the game just annoys you and that’s all you remember in the end, which is a shame. The presentation side of the game disappointed me a great deal and to say I wanted more from it would be a massive understatement. The visuals and sound design just lacked the wow factor and everything about this aspect of the game just felt dated, which in turn harmed the immersion levels somewhat. At the end of the day I can see quite a lot of people being quite disappointed with Extinction and I understand why because a game that is priced quite excessively shouldn’t have as many problems as it does. Don’t get me wrong it’s not the worst game I’ve ever played before and it does provide you with some very enjoyable moments at times, but these enjoyable moments are often littered with technichal issues and these issues harm the fun factor quite a lot. Unfortunately I can’t fully recommend Extinction to you at this time and I would definitely recommend that you wait until it lowers in price before getting it. Full Review »

It's like an old school film tie-in; just completely lacking in originality and any semblance of polish. If, like me, you played Attack on Titan and thought this might be a similar fun lark: THINK AGAIN. Extinction is clearly a blatant rip-off of AoT but is devoid of the fun gameplay that had. Traversal is BAD, attacking is joyless button mashing, there's no story to speak of (the characters talk about things like being a "Sentinel" but there isn't actually any lore or even cursory cut-scenes to give the characters some depth. Just astonishingly, inexcusably bad. If you pay more than $/€5.00 you're making a mistake. Full Review »

The problem with this game is the lack of variety when executing the mechanics, the history, the missions. Seeing all the content you can see that they have not tried hard to get a good product or did not give them much time. As this is an insult to the intelligence of the players who do not seem to take them seriously. He still has a season pass. Hopefully, they will send updates with better content such as the case of No Man Sky so that it improves relatively at least. As this is not a recommended game.
