It’s fair to say that if you enjoy games such as XCOM, or other turn-based tactical combat games, then Jagged Alliance: Rage is going to appeal to you. It doesn’t quite match the quality of its gameplay in terms of the visuals, and the sound design certainly isn’t going to win any awards, but if you’re after a game you can really sink your teeth into for hours on end – and still come out with a real sense of accomplishment at the end – then this is a game you should be adding to your collection.

It may not be the best strategy game of recent times (or even of this year), but Jagged Alliance: Rage! did something that no other series entrant from the last 19 years has managed to do: give hope for the future of the franchise.

Cliffhanger Productions has done a great job taking back us back to that 90s strategy game, Jagged Alliance: Rage! is up to its predecessors.

After a while, Jagged Alliance became repetitive. While I liked the mechanics and the thought put into the combat, due to some overly simplistic things, I found that doing missions that felt pretty much the same began to get to me over time. Still, I found the entire experience at least interesting, even when the story was kind of dragging along. At the end of the day, Jagged Alliance: Rage! is a decent little game with some annoying bits thrown in. It’s not going to set the world on fire, but it can keep some strategy fans busy for a little while with some fun thrown in for good measure. I’d just wait for a slight price drop before entering this jungle.

With XCOM available for almost every platform, why anyone would play a subpar version of it is beyond me. Unfortunately, that's just what Jagged Alliance: Rage! is except with an admittedly clever sneaking component.

I found the story to be enjoyable for the most part because it mixes in different emotions, while also not taking itself too seriously at the same time. Each character in the game you can play has been created really well and the different moves each character has means that they all feel important. While the presentation side of the game isn’t going to win any awards I must admit that I liked the atmosphere that was created by both the visuals and sound design. Unfortunately the game suffers with a few technical issues on the console which do hold the game back some. The gameplay is fun in short bursts it does tend to get repetitive. If you don’t like the tactical side of an RPG then there isn’t anything here that’s really going to change your mind. I’ve never played a Jagged Alliance game before but I have heard quite a few good things about the series and it’s quite obvious that it has a solid following. At it’s core this game is a tactical RPG and while it doesn’t offer anything new to this genre we haven’t already seen before they still do well with the mechanics that are present. Without a doubt my favorite mechanic in this game was its stealth and I must admit that I always got a great sense of satisfaction when taking down an enemy this way. I think I would’ve gotten even more satisfaction from these elements if the game didn’t suffer with the technical issues it undoubtedly has. That being said while these issues were cumbersome at times I was able to look past them thanks to the decent story and different characters at my disposal. Even though there’s variety in both the story and characters I would still recommend that you play the game in short sittings because it does get repetitive quickly. Despite its shortcomings, Jagged Alliance: Rage! gets more things right than it gets wrong and even though it’s not the best tactical game I’ve ever played before fans of these game’s will get something good out of this game. Thumbs up from me for those who fancy this genre. Expand
