Johnny Rocket on Xbox One is a game that just screams missed potential. It has a unique concept and a bold, beautiful art style, and yet those weren’t built upon to make a well-rounded experience.

Johnny Rocket is a complete misfire, spiralling noisily around your screen for 45 minutes. It’s broken, rushed and mercifully short, when it could have been a contender.

The game’s in stark black and white like the sketches from a book, and the enemies are the ‘Bazi’ Empire who have apparently allied with aliens and the natural world. Walruses, piranhas, penguins and bears all strap on RPGs and join the Reich. Or Beich. Johnny Rocket does have a few selling points that might tempt someone into shelling out the very small price of admission, but the game is an opportunity missed in the end. The art style of Johnny Rocket is rocking a free-hand, doodle aesthetic and a fresh look from the almost endless amount of pixel art that seems to dominate the indie gaming scene these days. Unfortunately there's also technical problems interfering the fun such as there's no crouching in the game. There are only three levels, all of which are pretty short. It took me about an hour to complete my first run of the game, and that was with a decent number of deaths being new to the experience. If you really put your mind to it, you could probably finish the game in half that time with a little practice. While the game is bold with its art style and animations and fairly unique concept. However the overall gameplay is way too basic, far too short and there's no real challenge you're basically playing it to the end rinse and repeat in the style of many basic classic arcade games. If you are an achievement hunter you'll be pleased with the easy gamer score but there's not a lot of meat on the bone here for your Xbox One library. Expand
