    Kaze and the Wild Masks is a must-own platformer — especially for anyone craving a new Donkey Kong Country game. The flow of the action is in line with Rare’s classic trilogy, and outshines the Returns games as well as Yooka-Laylee: The Impossible Lair. It features smooth controls and a lot of anti-frustration features to craft something that still offers a fair challenge, but scales the difficulty better than most and finds a healthy balance between collecting things and making doing so a chore. It’s genuinely rewarding to collect everything in a stage, but beating a stage on its own is still a lot of fun. It looks great and has a fantastic soundtrack to boot. No matter what platform you have, you’re in for a fun time with Kaze.

    In conclusion Kaze and the Wild Masks was a game I was hyped for …. And it delivered. This can be compared to Donkey Kong Country 2 from back in the day. Platforming fans and gamers that take a shine to retro-styled games will like this. The easy mode makes it more accessible to those who might have more difficulty with platforming while not penalizing the player for choosing it. Kaze and the Wild Masks is quality 90’s gaming … today.

    Kaze and the Wild Masks brought me back to a simpler time where I just enjoyed playing a memorable platforming game. It pays homage to numerous classics but makes a name for itself along the way. While it may not gain the same level of appreciation and following as the classics, it can certainly hang in there with the best of them. If you yearn for those 16bit glory days of 90’s platforming, Kaze and the Wild Masks will bring back those waves of nostalgia while giving you plenty to strive to collect.

    I cannot recommend this game enough. I loved Kaze and the Wild Masks, and hope it finds the audience it deserves so we might get more games from this team. It really ticked all the boxes I would expect from a game inspired by the mascot platformers I grew up with. It also helps that the game is coming to every platform imaginable. Do not hesitate if you love titles like Donkey Kong Country or even have the most minute nostalgia for that plethora of mascot platformers from the mid -to-late 90s. This game hits all those notes while injecting its own flavor to the cause.

    Sure, it’s attention-grabbing to do something new, and innovation does get reviewers hot around the collar. But, most of the time, we just want a good thing done well, and Kaze and the Wild Masks does its 2D platforming extremely well. While Kaze and the Wild Masks on Xbox wears the masks of various platformers, like Donkey Kong Country and Rayman, they’re all polished to a mighty sheen.

    Deserves more attention. This game is a fantastic platformer. If you like platforming games at all then I recommend this.

Nie jest to jednak tylko i wyłącznie hołdKaze and the Wild Masks to kolorowa platformówka mocno zainspirowana klasykami gier z lat 90-tych. Nie jest to jednak tylko i wyłącznie hołd dla tego gatunku. Zespół PixelHive umiejętnie bowiem łączy sprawdzone rozwiązania z własnymi dobrymi pomysłami. Jeśli więc ktoś chce oddać się wesołemu i wymagającemu przemierzaniu kolejnych kolorowych plansz 2D, to zdecydowanie powinien zainteresować się tym tytułem.

    W historii gier wideo nie było zbyt wiele platformówek (w zasadzie to żadna mi nie przychodzi do głowy), w których fabuła odgrywałaby znaczącą rolę. Niczego w tej kwestii nie zmienia również Kaze and the Wild Masks. Na samym początku gry pojawia się krótka scenka przerywnikowa dająca nam ogólny zarys fabuły. Niegdyś piękny i tętniący życiem świat pod wpływem straszliwej klątwy zamienił się w niezbyt gościnne miejsce do życia. Jedyny ratunek dla krainy i uwięzionego towarzysza stanowi tytułowa Kaze, która musi przemierzyć Kryształowe Wyspy i pokonać czekających tam bossów. Cała historia opiera się więc na sprawdzonym schemacie „bohatera” i krainy do uratowania. Nie ma tutaj więc nic nadmiernie porywającego, a całość prezentuje co najwyżej poprawny poziom.

    Kaze and the Wild Masks pod względem fabularnym może pozostawiać trochę do życzenia. Najważniejsze jest jednak to, aby gra pokazywała swoją „moc” w mechanice zabawy. Jak na platformówkę przystało, na dwuwymiarowych planszach skaczemy, unikamy lub eliminujemy licznych przeciwników, zjeżdżamy po pochylniach, unikamy pułapek, odnajdujemy ukryte bonusowe lokacje czy zbieramy serduszka i kryształy, które pozwalają na odblokowanie nowych poziomów na mapie świata. Jest więc dość „klasycznie”, ale w tym segmencie zabawy nie ma większego sensu czegoś zmieniać, jeśli się to sprawdza od lat. Najważniejsze jest, że rozgrywka jest wciągająca, zapewnia należytą porcję dobrej zabawy i stara się ona być „uczciwa” pod względem poziomu trudności. Postać reaguje na polecenia bardzo responsywnie, a twórcy nie przesadzali z różnego rodzaju „przeszkadzajkami”, które miałby utrudniać zabawę graczowi. Nie oznacza to jednak, że w ogóle brakuje tutaj miejsc, w których skok musi być wymierzony na milimetry, a graczowi znacząco podskoczy ciśnienie (na całe szczęście nie ma ich zbyt wiele). Bardziej doświadczeni gracze zauważą w wielu elementach rozgrywki mniejsze lub większe nawiązania do starych hitów. Ma to swój urok i pozwoli na oddanie się chwili nostalgicznych wspomnień.

    Poważnym wyzwaniem i powodem do pewnej frustracji na pewno w grze są bossowie. Każda z „wysp” kończy się potyczką jednym z nich. Walka podzielona jest na trzy etapy, w której przeciwnik wykorzystuje inną paletę zdolności. Graczowi nie pozostaje nic innego jak tylko nauczyć się ich na pamięć, nie unikając przy tym wielu śmierci i niestety też pewnego znużenia.

    Dość wymagające (ale bardzo ciekawe) są również plansze, w których to musimy mierzyć się z wyzwaniami środowiskowymi. Zagrożenia w postaci np. lawy czy wiatru, wymuszają szybkie przemierzanie lokacji i dbanie o to, aby nie popełnić żadnego błędu.

    Pewnym powiewem świeżości (niekoniecznie czymś zupełnie nowym) w sprawdzonej platformowej rozgrywce, są zastosowane przez twórców zwierzęce maski, które pozwalają króliczej bohaterce na wykorzystanie nowych zdolności. Przykładowo maska tygrysa powala nam wspinać się po ścianach, rekina na pływanie, jaszczurki na szybsze bieganie i dalszy skok, a orła jak łatwo się domyślić na latanie. Ma to ogromny wpływ na samą rozgrywkę i determinuje sposób dalszego przechodzenia danej lokacji czy walki z bossem. Chodzi tutaj nie tylko o zmianę tempa rozgrywki, ale również sposób reagowania bohatera na polecenia (wymaga więc to przyzwyczajenia do sterowania).

    Pod względem oprawy wizualnej gra dość mocno nawiązuje do klasyki ery gier 16-bitowych, jednocześnie wykorzystując nowe technologie, aby znacząco podrasować piękno kolejnych plansz. Zróżnicowanie przemierzanych światów jest dość duże od tych mocno kolorowych po niebywale mroczne i upiorne. Tła są bardzo dobrze przygotowane i naprawdę potrafią przykuć uwagę gracza. Tak samo jest z projektem głównej króliczej bohaterki i bogatą paletą animacji jej ruchów.

    Nieźle prezentuje się również ścieżka dźwiękowa gry, która została odpowiednio dopasowana do każdego „świata”, umilając tym samym przemierzanie kolejnych jego plansz. Nie wyróżnia się ona jednak na tyle, żeby można było o muzyce napisać genialna i doskonale zapadająca w pamięć.
