A good little shooter that could have been great, L.A Cops is like a nicer version of Hotline Miami that's a bit on the blander side.

While the gameplay is similar to Hotline Miami, there are some positive differences that help make L.A. Cops interesting. It adds a few unique gameplay elements, such as isometric camera movement, but the game lacks in categories like speed, strong personality and a compelling narrative to drive it above a game like Hotline Miami.

LA Cops is a neat diversion with some fantastic style. I had a blast in the short time I played it, but feel like it grows stale far too fast. This is the perfect game to snag during a sale, it is fun for the time it lasts, I just wish there was more to come back to once the raiding was over.

Regardless of it all, levels are still replayable, and at a price of 15 bucks, LA Cops is a bargain deal.

    A choppy, piecemeal shooter. [Issue#123, p.82]

Ultimately though, LA Cops is a very mediocre experience. The 1970s theme is largely unexplored, the story is almost non-existent and its gameplay is flawed in a number of ways.

LA Cops is an offensive and sh.tty video game, which does itself injustices by mixing terrible writing with bad and incredibly frustrating gameplay.

The dual partner mechanic takes some getting used to, although once mastered it introduces a level of tactical strategy and gameplay variety that I have yet to encounter in other games in this genre.

Lots of people seem to be making unfair comparisons to the gory grindfest that is Hotline Miami 2, a game that I like but feel is let down by glitchy AI and shoddy level design. LA Cops is lighter in tone - the cut scenes for example give a welcome injection of humour in between levels - while the gameplay itself feels like a more equitable trade off between player skill and simple luck.

Can't wait for the co-op mode that I hear is being worked on, as that will be an added bonus. Overall, a very entertaining and rewarding shooter.

LA Cops is a fast, action packed 3D top down shooter set to a theme of 70s Cops in LA trying to do a tough job in a tough town. Sounds greatLA Cops is a fast, action packed 3D top down shooter set to a theme of 70s Cops in LA trying to do a tough job in a tough town. Sounds great right? This should be good. Team 17’s latest shooter is pretty much a more colourful clone of Hotline Miami. The aim of the game is to complete missions, these can range from saving hostages to destroying drug tables. With funny cut scenes and a 70’s track on repeat, this game seemed like it was going to be a lot of fun.

La Cops lets you select two playable characters which you can flick between whilst you’re playing in-game, this gives the game a more unique feel. There’s a good selection of cops to choose from, all with typical 70’s textbook cop names like Kowalski. If you go down, you automatically switch to play as your partner which you need to use to pick up health packs and doughnuts in order to revive your other player. Although having two cops to play with sounds like a good idea, it really isn’t, we found ourselves stick with one guy and running through each level just playing as the one, we found this more fun than trying to move through the level as a team of two. The more you play with each cop, the more they level up, leveling them up with give them many more benefits including more health, increased speed, more ammo and allow their weapons to deal more damage. There is a melee attack which allows you to arrest the criminals, you need to creep up behind them and chuck a pair of handcuffs on them.
The levels are short and sweet. Each level is a different setting with different missions, this stop the game feeling repetitive. Each level is graded at the end, the final grade is based on many factors, how many criminals you arrested, how many kills you got, e.t.c. The graphics are very basics, the characters don’t even have mouths, this makes cut scenes very funny and enjoyable.

For the first couple of settings, you’re aided with auto aim, this makes everything so much easier, being able to shoot drug lords and criminals behind closed doors before they come launching at you. When you play on the harder settings, the auto aim gets taken away and you have to try and use the left thumb stick to aim. We found this quite difficult. The movement in the game is smooth which makes it more enjoyable. The game is short and there’s only 13 achievements which are pretty easy to get, the hardest being complete the game on each setting.
Even though there are some faults with this game, some things that could be brushed up on, we found ourselves playing this game for ages, we really enjoyed it and liked it. We would recommend it to anyone.

This game is mediocre at best. I have heard many people compare it to hotline miami, but they are sorely mistaken.

    The Gameplay:
The gameplay is composed entirely of: "Kill thr baddies, then break some objects". If doing that eighteen or nineteen times if interesting to you, then stop lying to yourself. This game has absolutely no variety whatsoever. Combine that with only around three enemy types and only five guns, and you have absolute boredom and frustration packed into one " fun" package.

    The Music:
Literrally just the same generic rock song over and over again untill you go insane.

    Story:
Story in this game is very hard to find. Cutscenes are brief, minute and a half scenes that are surprisingly delivered well. The problem is that none of the cutscenes are connected. This makes little sense, as any story elements will not show up again.

    The Partner System/Upgrade System:
The partner system is litterally the worst thing ever put in a video game. Instead of an AI controlled partner, the player must point with the cursor and press A to make the partner move. The partner stops moving when an enemy comes into his or her very small field of vision. This makes breaching a room very hard, as your partner will either stop in his tracks, blocking the player, getting both people killed. The lack of a decent AI makes your partner as helpful in combat as a dishrag. The partner will also wait untill the player is the correct amount of dead before engaging hostiles. The frustration from this alone is enough to make even the most hardened veterans of dark souls and hotline miami quit. The upgrade system was a good idea, but you only ever have enough XP to level up one guy, so you will inevitably leave your partner behind in favor of one overpowered cop.

This game is a frustrating, broken, nearly uncontrollable mess, and i urge you not to waste your fifteen dollars, ans buy some pizza rolls or something instead.

I don't mind a challenge but not one where my blood pressure is rising. I've finished many long, semi-difficult games but...

It became so tough on the 4th level, for me, that I just had to quit after dying, frustratingly, about 100 times. That's why I gave it a zero, it became unplayable and, therefore, a waste of money. It was set on the easiest play, too.
