Liftoff: Drone Racing is bringing simulation drone racing to consoles without missing a beat. While Liftoff: Drone Racing has been tough for me to wrap my head around control-wise I still had fun. With more time I know the first place finishes would start rolling in but even as noob to both virtual and real life drone flying, I had a good time and I’d imagine enthusiasts and general sim racing fans would as well.

Recommending Liftoff: Drone Racing to anyone who doesn’t have a strong interest in the sport or drones in general is difficult. To get the most out of the game, players will have to master tricky controls and put up with potential motion sickness. The lack of more varied game modes and a better tutorial really hurts the overall experience, too. Only those who want a deep simulator experience or want to practice drone racing without risking valuable equipment are likely to find much joy with the game, but at least there's an audience for Liftoff: Drone Racing, one that, while niche, the game caters to quite well.

Perhaps you have a friend or family member that isn't into gaming but is really into drones and you want to crossover the hobbies to spend a little extra time together without the overall cost of the drone equipment and/or potential damages. If so, then go ahead and give Liftoff: Drone Racing a try, but otherwise, maybe see if you know anyone who does play with drones in real life and see if they have one you can learn on; it might be more fun.

Liftoff: Drone Racing on Xbox is a Gordian knot of a game. Mastering even the simplest manoeuvres takes time, and that’s before you’ve mastered the improbably difficult racing. Master the racing, and you’re left with a slow, precise racer in an ugly environment.

It requires specialist equipment and the local resources necessary to actually conduct a race. Liftoff: Drone Racing makes for a near-impossible game to review as it boils down to how well you like the content the game is based on or if you don't. Basically a love or hate relationship forms between each individual player. Before you can do anything in Liftoff: Drone Racing, you have to be inducted through the tutorials. LuGus Studios knows that their game is idiosyncratic, so they hold your hand a fair amount. You’re taught two control sets. The first is semi-automated, and is for the want of a better word – arcade. You can hit things and bounce off, and the drone hovers without any input. In terms of Liftoff: Drone Racing game modes, there’s a career mode that takes users through the history of drone racing, which is a nice touch as it provides a good background to the sport, and a couple of multiplayer race types to try online. One problem with Liftoff: Drone Racing is that it can cause motion sickness in susceptible players. The quick jerky movement of the camera moving on screen combined with the ability of the drone to suddenly switch direction or even flip upside down can lead to some dizziness or nausea. Recommending Liftoff: Drone Racing to anyone who doesn’t have a strong interest in the sport or drones in general is difficult. To get the most out of the game, players will have to master tricky controls and put up with potential motion sickness. If this is your type of game dive right in, if you are new to the genre I would highly suggest a great deal of practice to hone your skills before just jumping in to try to play. Expand
