  • Summary: Mayhem Brawler is an urban fantasy themed beat 'em up that brings back the 90s arcade vibe to present day. With comic book style art and kick-ass soundtracks, it offers a unique experience that you can tackle solo or as co-op with friends while defining the next step in the story with your choices.

Mayhem Brawler on looks only seems like a standard clone of a side-scrolling beat-em-up. But there is more than meets the eye and that is not just because of the supernatural setting. The story variation with the choice system and the comic strip storyline does make it interesting. It really could have done with online co-op mind, as playing this alone is very tough. Even having a block to use didn’t make things much easier, and it’s something you’ll need to get to grips with quickly if you’ve much hope of completing it.

Mayhem Brawler on Xbox doesn’t do anything remarkable that can’t already be experienced in far better games elsewhere, especially since there is no shortage of beat ‘em up titles on the Xbox platform as is. This is a title worth checking out if you have already exhausted all the other alternatives and need another beat ‘em up fix.

Without any online multiplayer, I can’t see myself going back to this anytime soon unless my daughter randomly wants to play it again with me sometime. Mayhem Brawler is fully competent as a Beat Em’ up, checking off all the boxes, but doesn’t do much else to stand amongst the classics that we’ve seen many times before.

The '90s are back, sort of, in a comic book/urban fantasy mash-up that provides some co-op fun but can't quite live up to the rest of its genre.

Mayhem Brawler is a decent beat’em up, but everything it does, Streets or Rage 4 does better. It’s a decent alternative to SoR4, if you’re bored with that game, but it just doesn’t have the replay value or the fluid controls that you’ll find in SoR4. It could be an interesting try for beat’em up fans, but I highly suggest that you try it before you buy it. From the trailers, the game looks fantastic, but once I started to play it, the control flaw was obvious as I continued to play. Even though bosses, can be frustrating, they can be overcome with patience, but some of them can surely get very cheap no matter what exploits you find.

    "My associated PC Review"
I've been playing beat 'em ups for years. Mayhem Brawler is the game that puts a lot of freshness for the genre, with branching paths, different endings, and a whole new urban-fantasy setting that includes a ton of rogues gallery. Especially after the Air Supremacy update, with fun new mechanics, crazy combos, and new game modes, the devs obviously care about the game they've created and its fanbase. A game that lovers of the genre should NOT miss!

Mayhem Brawler provides two game modes and Story Mode offers unlimited continues and your lives are reset between stages. Arcade Mode isMayhem Brawler provides two game modes and Story Mode offers unlimited continues and your lives are reset between stages. Arcade Mode is tailored to hardcore beat-’em-up fans. It’s a game type that forces you to make it to the end without continuing. So it’s smart to get familiar in the Story Mode before attempting. Mayhem Brawler doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel in terms of mechanics and that’s a good thing as it brings the fundamentals home. The controls are on point and responsive. While the combat has a decent sense of weight, with punches and kicks delivering a satisfying connection. While the combo system isn’t as robust as other brawlers like Streets of Rage 4. So if you planned on juggling the baddies with huge hit combos, you might be somewhat disappointed. Mayhem Brawler is more “old school” in how it handles its beatdowns, making it feel more like a product of the era it attempts to emulate. That’s a good thing for retro gamers like myself. While an in-depth combo system would have been welcome, it’s not necessary here. Mayhem Brawler makes up for this by offering a selection of weapons to wield. From butcher knives to machine guns, you’ll never have to go far to find some fun item to take down your enemies. Each character also has two special moves. These are best used for clearing out enemies when you’re surrounded. The sprites are large and provide quality animation, and vibrant colors and dynamic shading do a great job of slamming the presentation home. The background details that make each scene pop off the screen are a nice touch as well. The music is less exciting than the visuals. It’s mostly rock tunes that are on offer will satisfy the ear enough. The game offers more genres of music that I tend to enjoy more than the fitting rock music. Mayhem Brawler is the most fun beat-’em-up since Streets of Rage 4 was released. With beautiful graphics, satisfying combat, and plenty of replay-ability, it’s a slugfest that will keep you coming back for more. While the game probably would have benefited from a more engaging combo system, it makes up for this with a great selection of weapons and a colorful cast of playable characters. If you’ve a fan looking for a new beat-’em-up fix, look no further. Mayhem Brawler will punch you right in the eye and you’ll definitely like it. So run on over to the Xbox digital games store and “smash” the buy button!
