  • Summary: In this 2D action game, you are part of the Mercenary Kings, the most skilled team of warriors-for-hire on Earth, but when your friends have fallen and the fearsome forces of CLAW have seized an island-wide top secret Laboratory Base, you have to do what it takes to stop them.

The art style is fantastic. It reminds me of both Metal Slug and Scott Pilgrim and the original soundtrack is superb with 8-bit sounds mixed in with a refined and catchy set up that even after all these years still has me whistling the tunes. The presentation is top notch here and really gives off that old school SNES feel. This is actually a pretty easy game to talk about. Many people got it for free on PS4 and get the new and improved update for free as well. Even if you didn’t, this is still a great game to get into for a pretty cheap price on Switch, Xbox One, and Vita. I highly suggest picking it up.

A fun but not perfect arcade in the likes of classics like Metal Slug, but with modern ideas incorporated. If you are one of those who love the high difficulty games, this is an optimal choice.

Its direct gameplay and the quality of its animations, make Mercenary Kings an honorable heir of Metal Slug, even adding crafting into the formula. Although the lovers of tough games may feel betrayed.

As I played I was pleasantly surprised with the number of homage to some of the classic games of the past such as Zelda and even Metal Gear, so if you’re looking to take a walk down memory lane with a crap load of guns and explosives, then Mercenary Kings should be on your radar. For $19.99 you are getting an overwhelming amount of content that should keep you and your trigger happy friends amused for quite a while.

It does take a bit of practice to become competent with the gameplay especially in the reloading of your guns, and figuring out how to upgrade your wares can be confusing at first, but Mercenary Kings is still a great casual game to pick up in between the epic blockbusters, or when you have twenty minutes to kill.

Mercenary Kings will no doubt appeal to those that are fond of the Metal Slug series. However, the gameplay doesn’t prove to be quite as frantic or energetic. This is a game that’s better when playing with others, and the added crafting and looting system certainly helps it to stand out. That being said, players will be enduring some poor design choices and irritating combat mechanics throughout the entirety of play.

Thankfully it was worth the wait because they have managed to get a lot of the important aspects spot on. The gameplay is super addictive and the fast and frantic action really does a great job of creating a fun and adrenaline-fuelled experience. I would however have liked the guns to pack more of a punch and a few more combat moves would have been a nice addition, but other than that they get everything else spot on when it comes to the gameplay. Mercenary Kings: Reloaded Edition is one of them rare games where it’s both fun playing on your own and in co-op, and there isn’t much in it but the co-op action just edges it for me. In terms of content the game has more than enough to keep you satisfied and each level is an absolute blast to play, so don’t expect to get bored anytime soon. I will say though that the enemies you face could have been a little more exciting and had more in terms of variety, but that doesn’t really become a problem until you get later on in the game. Something that really surprised me about the game was the amount of customisation you can do. I was really impressed that I could give my game a personal touch and by being able to do this things stay fresh for longer. The presentation side of the game ticks a lot of boxes for me. Visually the game has a real retro feel and look to it and the added modern touches work ever so well. The sound design is pretty good as well and they’ve done a good job of creating an action filled atmosphere. At the end of the day if like me you’ve been waiting for Mercenary Kings to come to the Xbox One then you will be very happy because it was worth the wait. This game is filled with action from to start to finish and the best thing is that the action has been done pretty much to perfection. The problems it has are very small and no more problems reveal themselves throughout, which is great and this allows you to focus solely on the addictive gameplay. Without a doubt Mercenary Kings: Reloaded Edition gets a big recommendation from me and I can see it being a game I revisit quite often. Expand
