Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will go down as the best-looking, best-playing, and most ambitious game in the series -- one that utilizes the new-gen hardware and the incredible Fox Engine to deliver both a visual masterpiece and more robust gameplay experience than its predecessors.

Long-term fans might feel sad that Kojima doesn't go out in a hail of meta-bullets, but his restraint lets those magnificent ideas breathe, resulting in one of the finest stealth games ever made. [Oct 2015, p.89]

Metal Gear Solid V Phantom Pain is an interactive piece of art that truly pays homage to the original game and successfully expands the franchise into an open-world game.

Kojima managed to create the perfect open-world stealth game, giving the player an incredible freedom coupled with great depth and variety. MGS fans will probably dislike its sparse and somewhat unsatisfying storytelling, but it undoubtedly is a masterwork of game design.

On one hand I love the game play. Building up Mother Base, the missions, the stealth and gunplay all feel so refined. The open-world sandbox is endless fun. The Metal Gear portion though sadly disappoints. The boss fights are lackluster, the cut scenes are not as wacky and outlandish as I expected, and the story never really grabbed me.

A fantastic stealth action game that offers an insane amount of ways to play, just don't expect it to feel like your typical Metal Gear experience.

Anyway this entry in the series is probably 3rd best maybe 4th i haven't decided yet. The gameplay in my opinion is the best the franchise has to offer. The controls are complex but easy to use but you have to pay attention to the tutorials. You will need to use most of the tools in your repitoire, quite a bit. The visuals and many cutscenes are stunning. I miss David Hayter as the voice although it was cool to have Sutherland. It was exciting to see they brought the story full circle and included characters from past games. It is hard to not call these last two games movies but to me there is nothing wrong with that because they did it right.

My complaints aren't very big but there are some. The whole ballon extract thing is a little ridiculous and i thought they could've done something a little more realistic. However Kojima always had a goofy sense of humor in such a serious story arc lol.

It is a very technically accomplished game, the attention to detail is immense and it is very polished. I cannot however agree with people that this is a "big" game. There are certainly many hours of play to be had, but this includes a lot of repetition of missions or revisiting the same areas to do slightly different things than before. The way the ending was left was a big disappointment and ultimately tarnished the whole experience for me. Expand

This game is good though definitely not the 10/10 many have given it.

In terms of gameplay this is definitely some of the best stealth gameplay around. A wide array of weapons, gadgets, player movements and always many ways to complete the mission. It is a real blast deciding how to approach a situation and highly satisfying when it comes off. Stealthing through the enemy and picking them off one by one has never felt so smooth or as satisfying.

However there has always been two sides of MGS games and while the gameplay is marvelous the story is somewhat of a disappointment. The intro is very enticing and cinematic but when the world opens up it really falls apart at the seams. The story becomes voice over, mission descriptions and perhaps a cinematic every few hours. It just is a real demonstration of the way the open world concept can be implemented to the detriment of story. I can only put it down to inexperience in this area.
