Metro Exodus is the perfect survival experience for the next gen. The game has all the ingredients to be the best game in the trilogy.

Exodus's combat has room for improvement, particularly when it comes to enemy A.I. behavior. The gunplay is tight and well-built, with an emphasis on customization, allowing you to play how you want to play. While I'm hoping polish patches come in thick and fast after launch, even when you acknowledge the game's rough edges Metro Exodus is among the best first-person shooters you can get right now.

Metro Exodus stays true to the series' roots while adding a very welcome open world component an greater variety both in environments and gameplay, with a more intimate story than before. Having awesome graphics doesn't hurt, either.

Fluctuating like a Geiger Counter between nihilism and utopianism, this game’s muddy morality is a thing of beauty in the current climate and could be one of 2019’s most important games as a result.

A brilliant expansion of the Metro saga, Exodus connects sections of familiar claustrophobic, immersive horror with a beautiful semi-open world and a new twist on the fantastic and oppressive retro future vibe.

As you might be sensing, Metro Exodus makes me feel severely conflicted. On one hand, I appreciate the characters and atmosphere, but on the other, I think it needed some more time. Features like individual volume sliders for voices and music are missing, the general button layout is awkward, and button presses don’t always respond as I’d expect. Mix that in with the bugs, and we have a package that has the structure for excellence but was set loose on the world too soon. In my heart, I have strong feelings for Exodus, but I’ll forever be haunted by how outstanding a few more layers of polish could’ve made it.

Following off the stellar Metro 2033 and Last Light, Exodus feels like a misstep for this series. This series has built a reputation on its quality, but Exodus falls flat in some ways that truly matter.

Expand

It's not quite as survival horror-y as the older games but I enjoy the newness of it. If it had been the same old Metro then people would have complained over that. In my eyes this is another very good example of 4A at work. Expand

Regardless of comparison to previous Metro games or if one is a fan or not of post-apocalyptic worlds, Metro Exodus has done so many thingsRegardless of comparison to previous Metro games or if one is a fan or not of post-apocalyptic worlds, Metro Exodus has done so many things right. The story was interesting and immersive. Some well done characters that brought life to a seemingly lifeless world at times. Different biomes all with varying ecosystems, creatures and enemies. Game mechanics that keep you on your toes and thinking about the best approach to various situations. This is not to say that the game is without flaws. While Metro Exodus released in a good state it still had various bugs and glitches, that while not game breaking were at times annoying and immersion breaking. Floating cans, clothing clipping and npc's getting stuck running into walls. Not to mention just some overall design elements like how clunky it looks when humanimals (ghoulish creatures) would run when on all fours or how weird the main characters shadow looks when walking. These both are examples of little details that set the game back. However it is little details that can take a game from great to only good.

Nearly 12 months after launch and the game is still unplayable on my Xbox One X Scorpio edition. I bought the steel book edition on launch dayNearly 12 months after launch and the game is still unplayable on my Xbox One X Scorpio edition. I bought the steel book edition on launch day and have only made it as far as the opening level in 11 months because the game keeps crashing my console and for the past three days the game crashes the console immediately after the opening cinematic.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled, changed the gamma settings, changed the resolution, deleted my save game data, downloaded the game pass version and nothing has stopped the crashes.

I am now in the process of downloading the game pass PC version just so that I can complete the game and forget about it forever, assuming it works on PC, however that means I can't play the DLC that I've already paid for in my initial purchase.

Absolutely shocking that this game was allowed to be released in such a broken state and it's unforgivable that it's still broken.

I won't be buying another game by either the game maker or producer again.
