With Mushroom Quest on Xbox One, we have a game that is far too easy, far too limited and far too short. There’s no replayability. And you’ll end up only getting an hour of gameplay out of it, if that.

Gameplay starts with simplicity –just collect a few gems and you’re done. The game gradually introduces more mechanics as the levels progress, meaning the player will not only need to master the use of single-pass platforms and box pushing, but also collect keys and cross treacherous timed trapdoors to gain access to the hardest to reach gems.

Graphically, Mushroom Quest reminds me of games like Bubble Bobble, or Q-Bert, with simple yet colorful pixel graphics. While the sprites are fairly basic themselves, the animation gives them a lively feel that engrosses the player. The levels’ music may be the same each time, but its a relaxing tune that never felt repetitive or grating.

The only complaint I have about Mushroom Quest is that there were only 30 levels. While the difficulty definitely ramped up as I completed each puzzle, I never felt that the game was too tough. One level is mostly comprised of timed trap doors, in which I had to maneuver quickly in short bursts to get to the gems scattered around the edges. While this took a while to get the timing right, I was really overjoyed when I finally beat it.

    Pros:
    -Difficulty scales
    -Mechanics are easy to learn
    -Awesome retro graphics

    Cons:
    -Very Short

    Overall:
    9/10

Mushroom Quest is a fantastic budget title that may not provide hours of entertainment, but is well worth the investment. The game seems lovingly crafted from the ground up and made me feel warmly nostalgic about gaming. The graphics are a welcome callback to joystick arcade games, and as a budget title, this, er, -spores- pretty high on the scale.

There is no story, you're a Mushroom, and for some reason, you have to get out of here... I guess... That aside, the game is short. 30 stages and most don't even pose a challenge. The first several stages of the game are seemingly meant as tutorials to help introduce the player to the already straight forward concepts. Place boxes on switches to hold them down, push them into holes to fill them, and collect the green gems. That's it. Mushroom Quest aspires to feel The Adventures of LOLO or other old school box puzzle games. At least LOLO had a story, and enemies to challenge you. Mushroom Quest doesn't feel like much effort was put anywhere but the sprites, which are clean and look decent. Mushroom Quest isn't high on my recommendations list unless you're looking for a time killer for a young player. Expand
