A combination of a great price, some brilliantly challenging mechanics, a rather unique premise, a quality visual look and that banging soundtrack pumping away, ensures that Octahedron should be right up there near the top of your wanted list.

A challenging psychedelic platformer, with a nice novelty in its platform generation mechanic and a great electro soundtrack.

Octahedron is a kind of platform in which the use of power to create platforms is very important and in which music has a great presence. In addition, the gameplay along with the amount of hours the game can offer us make Octahedron go beyond being a simple game to become a continuous challenge level by level.

Octahedron isn’t your average platformer. The solid design, wonderful soundtrack, and clever functionalities, go hand in hand to produce something fun and exciting. Though, with that being said, the floaty controls and repetitive gameplay often hinder this otherwise decent loop. Different it may well be, but it’s hardly groundbreaking.

Octahedron is hard in the obnoxious way that many old NES platforming games are. It kills you without remorse. It gives you little time to become warmed up the play style before ramping up the difficulty. New and fun ways to die just crawl out of the walls like a damn horror movie, but hey, it looks pretty while doing it.

There are a huge amount of puzzle platformers out there and whilst a lot of them are fun and enjoyable quite a few of them are pretty samey,There are a huge amount of puzzle platformers out there and whilst a lot of them are fun and enjoyable quite a few of them are pretty samey, which can lead them to become a little boring. Octahedron is a puzzle platformer that in a way breaks from the usual tradition and this without a doubt makes it one of the most enjoyable puzzle platformers I’ve ever played. Something that really impressed me about this game was the level design. Each level has had a lot of thought and effort put into it and this makes things stay fresh and interesting throughout. Platforming in these levels feels great and everything feels tight and fluid at all times and most important of all the fun factor stays high even when things get harder. The main reason why the fun factor never seems to dwindle is because they’ve got the perfect balance of being challenging and fair at the same time, so dying never seemed to frustrate me. I would however have liked to have had a few tutorials every now and then because not knowing what to do at the start can cause some unnecessary deaths, but the frustration levels remained low most of the time which is a bonus. Obviously a very important aspect in a game like this is how the controls handle, and thankfully they hold up really well. The controls are very simple to understand and they never get awkward so you don’t have to worry about doing anything complicated which in turn allows you to enjoy your journey through the levels to the max. In terms of content the game has enough to keep you going for a bit, but in my opinion there isn’t enough. Don’t get me wrong the content that is present has been done to perfection but once completed the game doesn’t give you much of a reason to return, so a few more modes would have given the game much more in terms of replayability. The presentation side of the game is awesome from start to finish. Visually the game has an abundance of neon colour and when you combine that with the groovy soundtrack you find yourself enjoying the levels even more, which is great. At the end of the day Octahedron is a game that I fully recommend to people who love a new and unique approach to a genre that hasn’t really had much uniqueness over the last few years. Each different mechanic plays a part in this game and when they combine together it’s a game that is not only fun but also very addictive as well, and for me it’s up there with the very best of puzzle platformers.
