Projection: First Light follows the adventures of Greta, a girl living in a mythological shadow puppet world, as she embarks on a journey of self-enlightenment with the assistance of legendary heroes from each culture she explores.

Accompanied by atmospheric visuals and an ethereal soundtrack made with antique instruments used for shadow puppet performances, Projection: First Light takes players on an inclusive voyage through the history of shadow puppets as it evolves through Indonesia, China, Turkey, Greece, and 19th century England.

Early in her expedition, Greta takes control of a source of light and learns of her ability to manipulate it. Shadows become platforms and walls, other elegant and imaginative solutions irradiate puzzles, and enemies can be dispersed as Projection: First Light explores themes of worldliness, respect and understanding.

Projection: First Light is a tough one to recommend then. On the one hand it has a lovely visual and audio style that draws us in, and the idea of the core mechanic is great. In practice though it’s too fiddly and unreliable to sustain a several hour+ title, and it likely won’t hold the attention though to its conclusion.

Even though I enjoyed my time with Projection: First Light's clever 2D platforming, there's no denying just how flimsy it can be at times.

With a unique backdrop and clever use of shadows, Projection: First Light delivers what it intended. A calm and casual puzzle platformer that is a pleasure to play through. The story is delivered in a nice shadow puppetry fashion, though some may find it hard to follow because there is no talking or narration. The biggest downside is getting glitched into walls or stuck. If save points could have been the actual checkpoints, then maybe it wouldn’t have been as much of a problem. The design and music are great, as well as how the puzzles are tackled. But because you or items can be glitched in areas they shouldn’t be, it becomes a persistent hope that it doesn’t happen (again), requiring you to restart the level. There is light at the end of the tunnel, but it’ll take some reworking of the game mechanics to really shine.

You play as Greta, an unfortunate, inattentive girl that lives in a fantastical shadow puppet world. Your adventure starts on Greta's worst day, when she finds a glowing butterfly and decides to catch it! In the process she inadvertently causes absolute chaos and who knows how much in damage, including smashing a taxi... After being repremanded by everyone, she is sent to her room. In her room the glowing butterfly shows her a way out! Through the theater and into new worlds. In the theater you learn how Greta intracts with the "hard" shadows, as they actually are. Once through the theater you get a ball of light you controll with the right joystick, and with it you can manually manipulate the shadows to use as bridges, ramps, steps, lifts, and more. The light isn't obstructed by any scenery and can be moved wherever you wish. Manipulation of the world, using the shadows sometimes takes some time, but ultimately patience got me through the roughest of times. If you rush, you'll get stuck in the shadows, or launch yourself or an object you're trying to use out-of-place and have to start back at step one. Projection is a charming and fun game, where taking your time pays off well. A great game if you enjoy a bit of thinking. Expand
