Red Dead Redemption 2 raises the bar for sandbox adventure games. It’s organic in a way almost unseen in any genre, creating an authentic open world that is as cohesive as it is compelling. This title will set the bar for action adventure games for years to come.

    Unquestionably 2018's best game, and an all-time open-world masterpiece. [Christmas 2018, p.89]

Red Dead Redemption 2 stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Grand Theft Auto V as one of the greatest games of the modern age. It’s a gorgeous depiction of an ugly period that’s patient, polished, and a huge amount of fun to play, and it’s combined with Rockstar’s best storytelling to date.

Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't just a masterwork with an unparalleled attention in details and world development, but a real new milestone in its genre, capable of further shortening the distance between movies and games, but without sacrificing gameplay and complexity. A game that everyone should play.

Red Dead Redemption 2 lives up to everything and more with what Rockstar Games have promised. More importantly, the gameplay is enjoyable and accessible, the story engaging and the characters are interesting, however what Rockstar Games have achieved is creating a truly interactive, immersive and massive open-world game that feels solid and you can almost imagine that you are part of this world.

Red Dead Redemption 2 may not be perfect, but its minor shortcomings are like tiny blemishes on a stunningly beautiful face. In a way, they only serve as a reminder of how this world isn't made for perfection. Every single aspect of the game will put you into the very shoes of an outlaw roaming America with his gang as they try to escape the law long enough to make the money needed to disappear for good. It's an epic, memorable and engrossing tale which also elevates the open world genre to new heights with the brand new interaction system, a cast of memorable characters and a ton of high-quality content to play for a long time.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s missteps are few. The autosaving system is a little bit cruel, leading you to replay failed missions not from a pivotal point, but often from the very beginning of the mission or the section; the game should have taken cues from Ubisoft’s Far Cry and implemented far more friendly checkpoint saves. And while horseback riding in this game is largely fantastic, it’s odd to spend so much time tapping a button just to create your horse’s pace. This is intuitive -- but it feels unnecessary at times, too. The entire Red Dead experience, though, feels fantastic overall.

Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't a game that should be taken lightly. This is true in most of Rockstar's long list of games, which often overwhelmRed Dead Redemption 2 isn't a game that should be taken lightly. This is true in most of Rockstar's long list of games, which often overwhelm the player with their sheer size and mechanical depth. Red Dead Redemption 2, however, stands out as a pinnacle among masterpieces. You may, understandably, assume that I'm simply riding the "Red Dead hype wagon" but, unless the game drastically changes after the first 10 hours or so, this is certainly not the case.

From what I've experienced so far, Red Dead Redemption 2 offers the player an unprecedented amount of options in what to do and how to tackle the, both optional and integral parts of the game. Fortunately these options do not overwhelm the player, but are instead revealed progressively, allowing you to first master what is already there. After several hours spent with the game I was still constantly being surprised by a steady stream of new features and added complexity to pre-existing mechanics.

All this depth, however, wouldn't be worth 2 cents if it wasn't for the incredibly high degree of fine tuning and polishment that went into the game. The frame rate stays smooth and constant throughout the whole experience and, incredibly enough, so far I haven't encountered a single bug during my 14 hours of playing the game. Rockstar have certainly nailed the shooting mechanics, but there are also more discreet options for those who aren't completely certain that lead is the be-all end-all problem solver.

To summarize: Red Dead Redemption 2 is a must buy for anyone looking for a deep and fleshed out experience, that gradually unfolds during many hours of game time. It's not a game that you can rush through over the weekend (though, admittedly, I myself might in retrospect have been a bit too hasteful in order to experience as much as possible in a short time window). If you're willing to put in the time however, Red Dead Redemption 2 is guaranteed to offer you a complete and thrilling experience, brimming with possibilities for the player to discover. If I have one complaint regarding the game it's that it didn't come out sooner.

I think this is the kind of game that people who like it will like very much. People who don’t like it will not care.

Today the atmosphere for mainstream games seems to be "rush, rush, rush, headshot boom, rush, rush, rush".

You can rush through RDR2 main story in a matter of 3 days. If you do, I guarantee you'll conclude that its boring, clunky, and overall not fun...

R* has sold over a billion dollars worth of copies and made something truly special here. They made a game that they wanted to play and made design choices that not every gamer will agree with and even the most seasoned will question. Its just refreshing to see a large AAA company not pander to the lowest denominator (because marketing told them to) but instead made a game they want to play with the quality most expect from a R* title.

There is a lot of detail in this game. The NPC schedules for example are fascinating. You can literally follow an NPC around for an entire day cycle and they actually have a life instead of just roaming aimlessly tricking you into thinking they are busy doing stuff only to find out they only go from A to B and then B to A.

At first I felt some frustrations of many as well but it was sort of a fault to my own. The first chapter was amazing but extremely slow with very poor checkpoint placement. Also, getting used to the controls and tweaking them in settings takes time (i play the game with free aim only so its tough). I was excited after the tutorial chapter and got into this habit of rushing early on and it ruined the game for me until I took a step back and allowed myself to get lost in the details.

The amazing view distances and visuals are captivating and you start to get really enveloped. The story is subjectively interesting and the characters are deep. The voice acting and mocap are some of the best in the game industry if not the best.

The clunkiness has always existed in R* titles but since they went for more realism like they did in GTA IV, it definitely has its moments of frustration but you really start to feel that being careless has its consequences like it does in real life. I love it.

If you're more of a casual gamer. Read Dead Online is a free second portion of the game that might be better suited for you. I sure will be playing it with friends and family and can't wait.

    Cheers!

It is an unfortunate thing that Rockstar one of the most prolific game developers that bring us such amazing experiences give little love toIt is an unfortunate thing that Rockstar one of the most prolific game developers that bring us such amazing experiences give little love to the pc community. They used to make wacky goofy games and one offs that pushed the envelope in different directions and took risks but Take 2 is a disease riddle with corporate money addicted micro transaction loving soulless garbage. I love Red Dead and put hundreds of hours into it and more on the remaster before Red Dead 2 but this is unacceptable. Why is it that the pc is an after thought that developers just throw crap at a wall and hope it sticks? The pc is what gave Rockstar it's billions of dollars from online and mod communities yet they give so little of a f$#% that it hurts their well earned reputation. Red Dead 2 is an amazing well built story with compelling characters and story beats that keep you committed and engaged throughout it's lengthy campaign. This is one of the most engrossing and beautiful experiences I have had on my Xbox one X but the pc version is a hot garbage fire that is unacceptable. You are made by your customers and destroyed by the same people who once held you in such high esteem. The years of love and childhood fond memories can only last so long before you start to get torn out of the past by just how greedy and disrespectful these devs have treated this community. There is noaccident that CDProject Red is held so high as the gold standard of how to treat your community and give them what you want yourself from a game. Once you put money above fun, exciting stories and strip single player dlc out for some boring "community" mods and games as a service nonsense you deserve everything said about you and seeing so many who loved you starting to leave. You make games for the love and enjoyment it gives you and everyone who interacts with it's world. People give their time, attention, and hard earned dollars for a product when there are so many games that they do not have to support or give you that valuable commodity. Step back and really think about how this affects your company and make a decision money or enjoyable enthralling stories that change the industry because you are almost a shell of the once great Rockstar.
