As the lights go out, the embers of darkness are stoked in the sleepy town of Dormont.

Whispers of disappearances carry through the town as a burgeoning, uneasy and irrational fear begins to spread and darkness comes to be an unwelcome reflection to Those Who Remain.

Some mistakes should never happen, not when your life is complete – and yet they do. Edward had the good life, a beautiful wife and the perfect little girl, yet finds himself several whiskeys down and driving through the night of Dormont to end his secret affair – in a bid to fix his mistakes.

As Edward pulls into the Golden Oak Motel, he is unaware just how much this night will change his life…

The horrors and darkness that thrive in the corner of every eye are torn loose…

Those Who Remain places you in an up-close, psychological horror story set in the sleepy town of Dormont – a town in a spiralling split from the fabric of reality, warped by darkness and the deeds of the Citizens who reside.

Confront the uncomfortable horrors reflected by the darkness and survive the night of Dormont as Edward is confronted with a test of his sanity, morality and the shadows of evil that lurks below.

Those Who Remain features an eerie atmosphere, inventive puzzles, and some moments of genuine tension via its shape-shifting world, but fussy controls, one-dimensional stealth, and a narrative that lacks cohesion prevent it from stepping completely out of the darkness and into the spotlight.

Those Who Remain puts on a passable front, but once we get past that there’s nothing here that’s worth getting worked up over. With a dull story, tedious searching of areas using unresponsive inputs, scares that never really come and some technical hiccups that make it feel like a last gen title, you’re best off looking elsewhere for your pulse racing thrills.

You are Edward, and you've come to this ramshackle motel near the town of Dormont to break it off with your mistress and try to make right the life you're destroying with your family. You arrive to find her bags in the room, and the shower running, but she's nowhere to be found. Edward now sets out on foot to the nearby town to find everything is all wrong. Figures with glowing blue eyes linger in the darkness, greeting you with long knives if you dare enter their shadows. Seriously, walking into a place that's just a bit too dark is rewarded with instant death. With your checkpoints few and far between, this can make gameplay frustrating as you could be sent back to have to replay quite a bit, and you sidestep one time into a shadow and have to do it all again. The game plays hard on this darkness, as a lot of the game's puzzles will have you dealing with it, like knocking things out of the way to let light pass or finding a small object in a darkened room. The reticle has it's tricky moments, and you will be digging through a lot of drawers, that if you aren't pointing precisely at the object, you'll likely close the drawer. There is a ton of fun and inspiring concepts that are unfortunately lost in the frustration the game can induce. The game has multiple endings based on the decisions you make along the way. A decent horror game can be found here beneath the frustrations that fans of the genre should appreciate. Expand
