A fun and captivating arcade variation to the more serious WWE 2K annual series, with entertaining gameplay and a solid fighters roster. It might lack a bit in variety, but it'll surely please wrestling lovers.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds is a good comeback for the saga, and leaving us with a fun game for fans and casuals. Much more arcade than any of its predecessors, a well-polished cartoon look and an entertaining combat make WWE 2K Battlegrounds a game you will want to try if you like fighting games.

The game will perpetually get compared to WWE All Stars and I think it’s fair. I have to admit that through my rose colored glasses, I remember All Stars as the better overall title at launch, but the lack of roster depth (including no women) and the fact that it died off because its parent studio did really hurt its potential. The fact that Battlegrounds still that potential to be discovered and 2K can do so much more with it makes this an interesting title to watch, and one I’d recommend giving a shot if it intrigues you enough.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds is the WWE’s big release for the year, but it’s taken a new direction after last years effort and is a decent arcade alternative to the previous WWE games. The gameplay is fair and different, but you always expect a decent storyline to play through as well. The comic strip idea is OK but with no voice acting anywhere it just feels a bit weak.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds on Xbox One brings a fast-paced arcade wrestling game to the market, which features a greatly diverse roster, a decent variety of modes and moves that pack a punch. Sadly, the bulk of the gameplay takes a while to get to grips with and even then, it becomes monotonous after a short length of time. The limited access to the roster doesn’t help in that sense, nor does the utterly bland narrative.

The game has tons of items to unlock and an overall good amount of stuff to do, but all of this really falls flat when the gameplay gets so repetitive. No matter what mode you play, there isn’t much gameplay variety outside of the standard gameplay mechanics. You don’t have the options that you get in the usual WWE 2K yearly release and it all wears thin fast and becomes a chore to play. The game is honestly fun at first, but it just doesn’t hold up well in the long run. I honestly prefer WWE 2K20 over Battlegrounds and that’s saying a lot with all the problems that game had.

As it stands, the implementation of grind and paid currency wring all the fun out of the experience, leaving a game with some potential that isn't worth the effort to see all the way through. Much like a modern-day RAW main event, the in-ring action is sound if not memorable, but it's the decisions behind the scenes that really ruin it for everyone.

TheWWE 2K Battlegrounds is a different approach to the other 2K wrestling games from franchise and is more arcade than simulation driven. The game’s price of admission is a bit hefty for what it is, and the micro transaction system is in full force on top of that. However as a game for fans of wrestling WWE 2K Battlegrounds has established itself with a more style than the previous franchise offerings of WWE games from 2k. A game developer, somewhere at 2K and Saber Interactive, has made an effort to overhaul the fun with this years release. Gameplay in WWE 2K Battlegrounds is basic but that keeps the controls from hindering the more arcade style thats set out to ensure you have fun. There is little depth to the wrestler’s move sets and although different classes of wrestlers have different moves, a lot of these are actually shared even between the more iconic wrestlers on the roster. Despite the minimalist gameplay mechanics, the game still maintains fun to play and the wrestlers even have special moves. There are different game modes with the highlight of them being the King of the Battleground which is a mash up of a Battle Royale where the last wrestler standing wins. WWE 2k Battlegrounds like most wrestling games, is more fun when you play with your friends, but there is also a campaign mode, and I must say it is indeed better than WWE 2K20’s was. Gone are the strange faces, clipping, and distorted voices this year. While this all might sound great, there is still one enormous complaint that many will have and thats the micro transactions. You can grind to unlock wrestlers by grinding or if you just want to play as your favorite wrestlers from the moment you buy the game, then you can opt to purchase them for immediate access. WWE 2K Battlegrounds is definitely one of the best WWE 2K games over its many years, so if you’re a fan this is an absolute must buy, if not a huge wrestling fan but do enjoy it on occasion be sure to pick it up on sale. Even the achievement hunters will rejoice in the easily obtained gamer score in this years release for your Xbox One console. Expand

TheThe game is very overpriced and while it might be somewhat generous with giving currency at the start, it eventually becomes a grind. The superstars each have different styles and those who share styles also share preset move sets which makes them less unique to play as aside from a different finisher. There’s a terrible haze effect when viewing characters in the superstar menu as well. A big gripe I have is how much momentum you lose when reversing moves. When you’re having a back and forth match with either AI (which are very dumb) or a friend, it just vanishes after 2 or 3 reversals which makes it hard to store a finisher, a stupid move for an arcade like game. Rather than one button assigned to reversing however, the four face buttons are chosen instead and the prompt will always be random. The only good thing I can say is that the online performs much better than previous titles where the game can lag and you have to predict reversal timing a full second in advance. Over all though, definitely not worth the money even on a discount. Just keep playing All Stars Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Conceptually a game everyone can pick up and play, sadly is not enough to have longevity in any collection.

    Pro's
    1. A wrestling game that plays more arcade abd less simulation. Variety is a good thing

    Con's
    1. The micro-transaction polluted the game to the point you grind or spend possibly hundreds of dollars to play at its full capacity. Gamers despise this and here we are exploiting the pockets of a customer just to enjoy the game. Its one thing to utilize this in small doses, but Battlegrounds exploits this with everything in the game. It becomes problematic to the point where features such as Create a Wrestler is useless unless you grind hundreds of hours just to remotely make a unique character....or spend tons to do so.
    2. Create a Wrestler is very shallow itself. Not being able to generally create actual wrestlers to fit inside this arcade world is a shamble. Let alone having to purchase more slots to potentially create more wrestlers is disgraceful. Wanna upload your creation to the world? Sorry... You can't as its not an option.
    3. The repetitive game nature makes longevity of playing the game obsolete once you have spent countless hours playing Battleground Mode and Story Mode. The rinse and repeat nature is fun for an hour every blue moon, but soon enough you will tire because of its elementary level gameplay mechanics and lack of any depth. Arcade or not, this game could have expanded upon the mechanics deeper than it did.

We can continue to pick out problems, but these 3 problems are incredibly big flaws that detract the game from being any better than a weekend rental.

There is literally nothing that seperates Roman from The Rock except the visual difference. Absolute garbage.

That is all not to even mention the 2K micro-transaction goldmine. This game is way overpriced in the first place for what it is, then you want to charge more for it just to play with my favorite wrestlers out of the box? Yes, you can unlock them by grinding in game, but when a game says it has a roster of contained characters I expect to be able to use all those characters when I fire the game up. Not have to choose between grinding through matches that honestly are already boring after 3-4 plays or paying more money for a superstar I want just to find out that he is gameplay-wise an exact replicant of one that I could already play with.

Better luck next time 2K, you get a dead zero from me on this one. Can only hope WWE has the sense to move the license soon to a studio that will actually respect the fans and deliver a quality experience like THQ used to.
