  • Summary: Smash, clobber and bash the murderous legends of Slavic mythology in this darkly funny action role-playing game that changes every time you play. Play as Ivan, a one-handed blacksmith with incredibly bad luck, who must take on the impossible tasks given to him by the tzar.

Drawing inspiration from Slavic folklore, Yaga on Xbox One certainly delivers in terms of its narrative and lore. But in terms of combat and environments, it feels underwhelming. Levels get repetitive quickly and the combat system leaves a lot of room for improvement.

A few of Yaga’s game mechanics cripple what would otherwise be an enjoyable pre-modern Slavic tale of witches, kings, magic and a one-armed blacksmith hero. Some core aspects of play aren’t explained fully or not at all, and ironically it’s these fundamentals which help drag the experience down. That element, coupled with seemingly arbitrary and crippling punishments tied to character death, robs the overall experience of much of why gamers game – for enjoyment. Yaga will frustrate you, and not in a good way.

The amazing theme and artwork just can't carry the lackluster gameplay of Yaga. The frustrating luck system affects so much of the game, and it's hard to get invested in the crafting when your weapons just keep breaking.

Yaga is a game based on folk tale called "Baba Yaga" which is mythological wise old witch
who lived long ago people believed. In this game we're controlling a man called Ivan and our character cursed with bad luck. In this game you're trying to complete the missions given to you by the king called Tzar and the king cursed by Baba Yaga because of greediness. Basically "the king" gives you impossible missions to keep you away from the kingdom so he can get out of the curse that baba yaga patched on him but Ivan always finds a way to complete his tasks with the help of his grandmother and of course baba yaga. Another thing about the game which makes you smile all the time are the riddles
mostly all the characters speak in riddles which makes interpreting the story more interesting. Even though the game based on a folk tale you have chance to make choices. The first quest of the game is Tzar asks a power beyond the measure and Ivan finds a golden apple
but it's up to you to give it to the king, or fool him. Also by your choices you gain extra things sometimes bad luck of course. The game is based on myth and single player only. You can only control one character but there's tons of upgrades that you can use along the way. Ivan is a blacksmith and he has a hammer with the stones and the materials that you find in the map or getting it from the merchants you can make different hammers to yourself. Also you have secondary tool which is deals less damage but the utility is great such as shield or bear paw you can also upgrade them or customize them as you wish that helps you to deal more with a specific enemy you my find troublesome. There's plethora of side missions that you can complete to make some gold and use it to upgrade yourself. Other than basic and secondary attack you can also use your dodge skill to avoid in coming attacks
You can use some fragments to give yourself some extra speed or health the upgrades are fells like limitless sometimes you can summon a boss that you've killed before or sometimes you can use a seed to grown spikes from the ground or use the golden apple to have a power beyond the measure it's all up to you! It really is quite a unique entry into the Xbox One library.
