  1. There's enough meat on Burnout's bones to provide an engaging, albeit unoriginal, take on arcade racing.

A solid competitor - fast and fun and oddly addictive. [Summer 2002, p.93]
  3. If it's depth you want you'll be disappointed, but if you want to lose yourself in a high-speed car chase or force your buddies into a head-on, this one's for you.

Comfortable, basic controls make the game widely accessible.
  5. The crashes are a great gimmick, but after the first couple of hours the replays become more of a nuisance than a positive effect.

It paved the way for the future of the series but has unfortunately not aged well.

Bad: The graphics and car models looked decent for 2002 but look pretty poor now. The music is forgettable. The sound effects for crashes and the cars aren't great. The car selection isn't that great even when you unlock the rest. Only 6 to use and that is disappointing. Championship mode is too short. There aren't many tracks to race on either.

Good: The gameplay is still addictive in its own right. I did like the diverse courses. I like the cheats you unlock when you beat the game. I did like the other game modes. I thought the difficulty was challenging but not too hard.

Overall it was ok for the time but Burnout 2 improved in every way.
