If there was one reason to see 40 Years in the Making: The Magic Music Movie is for its music. Constantly playing in the background, you’ll find an appreciation for how good this band was, how a band this good could never find success, and how the group’s dynamic tore it down.
Beyond celebrating the music, 40 Years in the Making: The Magic Music Movie has something to say about the compromises and reconciliations that are a part of aging, and it turns out to make for a stirring and healing reunion.

The Magic Music Movie is a beautiful, bittersweet tour of raw talent that never got the chance to be embraced by the public. This journey through the past into the present reminds one that music is a force that transcends time, distance, and personal quarrels. This film nods to history throughout, reflecting a period that mirrors our current political climate, creating a narrative that appeals both to older viewers and younger viewers, who are able to relate to the identical struggles. The Magic Music Movie has several moments of levity, but also reminds one in a sweet and somewhat heavy way that though things may not work out the way we plan, they will come together in the end. The movie is artfully made, from the directing to shot choice to animation and editing. Reaching the end of the film felt like coming home from a trip - exhilarated with a twinge of sadness, and wishing you could go back for more.

I had never heard of the band Magic Music, I have never been to Boulder, Colorado and I wasn't around in the 70s, which is why I was so surprised when this movie captivated and moved me to tears - in a good way! This is a story about life, friendship, dreams, redemption and the power of great music. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

There is magic in this film's ode to growing old and being with the people who knew us young.
40 Years in the Making: The Magic Music Movie transcends the trippy nostalgia to deliver a moving message about the healing power of reconciliation.
Only a monster would begrudge Aronsohn for putting this all together. It doesn’t hurt that Magic Music really do have some chops.
Where the film is fascinating is the ways it examines the wandering lives of working musicians who stay in touch with the tunes even as life goes on.
40 Years in the Making is a cliquey undertaking that leaves you mostly on the outside looking in, but after witnessing the joy of its participants at the end, there’s little to begrudge.
Really fun movie about a band you've never heard about. All quirky interesting characters - talented enough to have a been a success, but they just weren't. It's an interesting movie that makes you think about what it is to be successful, and I was really glad to see them get a second chance to do what they love, and discover their music. Really enjoyed this. I recommend it.

A truly genuine and authentic story, skillfully discovered and told, in a compelling fashion. The fact that all the major characters are wonderfully musically gifted, flawed in their own unique manner, and rise above their individual challenges in unexpected ways is a fabulous tale, spanning four decades of their lives, that has (as Kissinger used to say) “the added benefit of being true...”. Tons of humor, plot twists, emotional resonance, and great previously unheard music. Absolutely fascinating, and honestly absorbing. As a friend of mine noted:”A few minutes in, and you forget it’s a documentary “.
