Aatsinki is a work of cinéma vérité of the highest order: vivid, immersive and unflinching.
This challenging and mesmerizing documentary captures horror and joy with the same gorgeous dispassion.
While some of the workers' chitchat is translated via subtitles, long passages of it are not. Oreck's imagery of the forbidding Arctic landscape through its seasonal transformations (the movie covers roughly a year) is eloquent enough.
It sometimes strays off the beaten track into shapelessness, but Oreck lends individual segments a quiet fascination.
The Aatsinki siblings never rise past a kind of rotely anonymous masculinity, and overall the film tends to lull rather than engage the senses.
