Alita lays out her empathetic groundwork early and rarely diverges from it. How wonderful to have a hero that always follows through with what she fights for. How wonderful to have a blockbuster that aspires for so much and mostly delivers on those ambitions.
It’s goofy as hell and borderline inexcusable at times, but it’s also kind of glorious.

For all of Alita’s she-Pinocchio charm — and her Cameronian estrogen-charged badass-itude — she can’t quite carry the audience all the way across that pesky uncanny valley.
Alita: Battle Angel is a film with Imax spectacle and big effects. But for all its scale, it might end up being put on for 13-year-olds as a sleepover entertainment. It doesn’t have the grownup, challenging, complicated ideas of Ghost in the Shell. A vanilla dystopian romance.
Now, after a deluge of comic book epics and other CGI-filled sci-fi fantasies, the movie feels like it’s way past its sell-by date. Alita: Battle Angel looks ready to rock, but time has sucked the life out of the party.
There are no icebergs here, but that doesn't prevent the movie from sinking under its own weight.
By the end of this derivative, heartless mess, you’ll conclude that a garbage dump is exactly where writer-producer James Cameron’s new project belongs.
One of the best movies I have ever seen. I honestly don't know what movie the critics were watching but Alita: Battle Angel is an amazing movie, brought to life not only by Rosa Salazar and the other stars but by Robert Rodreguez, James Cameron and the entire VFX team. Very few movies deserve a sequel as much as Alita.

Big eyed fighting girl in the uncanny valley city of the future. There's a much more interesting backstory hinted at, but much like the world building it isn't explored in any satisfying way. Instead we get robot wars fistfights and a cringe love story between a human being and some spare parts in the shape of a pre-pubescent girl. I haven't been this creeped out since I watched the love scenes between a human and an insect in "Bee movie". There's a weird assortment of grotesque cyborgs (reminding me of the movie A.I.) a futuristic sport which reminds me of rollerball, and an evil overlord in the sky city. One huge let down with this movie is there isn't a proper conclusion; some underling bad guys get their comeuppance but the main antagonist is left for a sequel that will never happen.

I was disappointed, to say the least. I was looking forward to this movie, but it didn't live up to the trailers, or my thoughts of it being another Ready Player One. The use of CGI is excellent- but the storyline is what was awful. I nearly fell asleep halfway through because it was so dull- the story was not at all consistent and jumped from one subject to the other that I honestly didn't know what was happening anymore, and it was super predictable in every way. nothing in this film made me go "oh, didn't see that coming" except for when the dog gets murdered, but it made me so mad I wanted to leave the cinema. I stuck through it till the end, only for there to be a cliff hanger to set up the second movie that I somewhat wish will be better than this one? But let's be real, there are never any good sequels to films. The three stars are only for the CGI.
