This movie has some good scenes that are amazing on their own but the entirety does not form a cohesive story. You get a sneak peek into 1920's movie industry but that is not enough to keep me glued to the screen for 3 hours. Esquisito, estranho, cansativo e com algumas pitadas de humor, babilonia é um filme esquecivel que pode tirar algumas risadas do espectador

If Damien Chazelle hadn't made the masterpieces that are Whiplash and La La Land then I probably would have liked this more but as is, it's kind of disappointing.

You gotta accept that Damien Chazelle went all the way with this ambitious film. 'Babylon' has big ideas, and it doesn't care if they're uncomfortable, which I appreciate. My problem with it it's that the film gets lost within them. TheYou gotta accept that Damien Chazelle went all the way with this ambitious film. The runtime is also an issue; all the Tobey Maguire stuff is weird and messy. Margot Robbie becomes annoying by the end, and Diego Calva is good, but he can't carry the movie by himself. All in all, a project with some good moments, but not enough to be more engaging. Expand

A degenerative film with Margot "flexing her acting chops" by acting like Harleen Quinzel throughout the film.

Some good scenes, fantastic look into how actors can struggle with a scene and the payoff for finally getting it right, and the costumes & early Hollywood setting pays off.

I have mixed feelings and somehow the current Hollywood has made me dislike film.

A long, sexual, and offensive flick that I was hoping to be another gem from Damien Chazelle that at least has substance.

It had a top level soundtrack and some really great and memorable sequences. That movie montage though near the end that was a big time yikes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film had too many gross out scenes for me. The Tobey shock scenes were too much I had to fast forward through those. I did like the plot when it focused on the magic of movies and the Hollywood scene 100 years ago. Expand

The elephant was already placed at the symbolic center of Hollywood in "Good Morning Babilonia", Taviani brothers '87, one of their least successful films. I have no idea how Chazelle could believe himself captivating with the drama of a handful of protagonists and a historical period after havin' portayed them for the first half of the 189 minutes as "putrid and putrescent" (Roberto Manassero). Nostalgic coprophilia and urophilia? Did he want to evoke the unstoppable decline of a depraved and outrageous age by bypassing the magic of identification with anyone who took part in it? Reassuring monologue: "Art is forever". So why get involved in the tragic fate of the actors? Bouncing between immortality and twilight, eternity and transience, he passes from one contradiction to another in an unresolved ambivalence. A virtuosic ode to cinema in theaters as much as the directors mentioned (Kubrick, Spielberg, Cameron, etc.), and if he has resoundingly flopped in his intent, there will be a reason and I hypothesize that the self-referential metacinematographic indulgence attracts yes and no some cinephiles, the "how" will also be amazing while the "what" leaves indifferent and exhausting.
