The movie’s pretty great — not quite “Fargo” with lobsters but close enough, and about as good as regional filmmaking gets. Filmed in Harpswell, Maine and environs — the cobwork of Bailey Island Bridge curves through one scene — Blow the Man Down delves cleverly and suspensefully beneath the surface of a small, well-appointed fishing town in winter. There are bodies and there is blood. There are also a lot of quietly furious women.
This atmospheric, expertly crafted little New England noir has droll dialogue, a female empowerment theme and a sly use of crime elements.

“Blow the Man Down” is a sinister and almost mythic nautical thriller that honours genre classics by the Coen brothers amongst others, and comes close to reaching them. Can't wait to see what the directors do next.

It gives the impression of wanting to take the Coens' style and blended with a lost and failed Stephen King story.
It never seems to come together completely, and I must say that I hate when the writers believe that black humor is a kind of counterbalance for their shortcomings.

Not a masterpiece that will change your life, but you’ve probably had your life changed enough lately. It’s 90 minutes of thoughtful, atmospheric, well-made entertainment, and that’s more than good enough.
Armed with a truly feminine perspective, Blow the Man Down rises above being a Coen Brothers imitation to deliver a gripping and tightly-woven yarn.
A refreshingly offbeat noir, one that spices its murder-mystery thrills with a good bit of feminist empowerment.
While the sisterhood in Easter Cove is indeed powerful, the secrets that bind its members prove to be fairly simple, and the result is intriguing enough to make you wonder what these writer-directors might accomplish if they applied their vision to a more expansive canvas.
A small Maine fishing village is the locale for this extremely mild crime drama. It revolves around several women: A trio of seniors who seem to be influential busy bodies, the woman who runs the local **** (Margo Martindale) and 2 sisters whose mother has just died. When one of the siblings gets into trouble, she relies on her sis to help. Meanwhile, the elders gather and gossip, while disparaging the "madame" and her girls. The film starts out feeling like there might be a Coen Brothers influence, but the sharp cleverness of their films never manifests itself. While the characters and their performances are mildly engaging, the writer/director team of Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy didn't create an interesting script and couldn't make the movie even mildly tense or compelling. The addition of fishermen singing sea shanties is a rather pretentious device that doesn't add anything but extra minutes. The film's potential never rises above passable.

This is about ineffective men singing absurd (albeit not so bad, actually) songs while women keep everything running through patience, wisdom and cunning. There is a rather generic crime story - but hey, of course the real culprit is a man, was there any doubt? Yawn, how original!

Feels like a made for TV film. Terrible performances from the 2 protagonists seem like they'd be a better fit on a soap opera. The plot is also incredibly flimsy meaning disbelief and practical thinking would both need to be suspended for this film to even exist. Cinematography and the Maine setting were interesting **** worth your time
