In an industry that defines “mature audiences” as anyone old enough to vote, a movie centered entirely on women over 65 — a sex comedy, no less — feels like some kind of small Hollywood miracle.
Book Club may in the end be little more than an excuse for a senior sex comedy, and a somewhat sleepy one at that, but at least it understands the weird energy of enjoying something you know you shouldn’t.

Let me preface this by letting you know that I am 18 yr old who loves to party and drink. Watching the trailer on youtube made me think this movie would be lighthearted but only relatable to middle aged women. I was so wrong. This movie left me laughing and a feeling of wisdom which can only be imparted by someone who's lived their life. I found myself surprised that I could relate to the mother, who sacrifices her own life to care for other people, even if those people have outgrown their need for her care. The joy of laughing along with the women when they regale their dating adventures made me feel like i was having tea with a bunch of fun aunties.
This movie is great because it does not depend on vulgarity for humour. The humour is so subtle and FUNNY because they come from moments that occur in real life. They do this in clever physical metaphors and some really clever banter, which left me impressed and thinking "I need to steal these lines". It was amazing to see strong female friendships with all support and no envy. Each personality was likeable and distinct.
I recommend this movie for teenagers and above. Everyone will find something to relate to and laugh about. I found this funnier and therefore liked it more than the box-office record breaking Crazy Rich Asians.

The cast is just as game for the broad humor as it is for the emotional beats; the latter’s familiarity doesn’t detract from its poignancy.
Book Club has a script that’s often so heavy on the corn — make that corn syrup — that it strains credulity and leaves you groaning. But then, darn it, suddenly it makes you tearful, with an unexpectedly genuine moment, or laugh out loud. It’s a credit to the cast, and the cast only.
There are also Photoshopped aggregations of Bergen, Fonda, Keaton and Steenburgen, and though they were never actually grouped together when young, they register reasonably well here as lifelong friends. The movie rides entirely on their charm, not so much on the strength of the writing or the jokes.
A disgrace and a waste of the talents of Oscar winners Keaton, Fonda and Steenburgen and Emmy recipient Bergen. Obviously, the film is intended for an older audience. But is this anemic, feature-length sitcom really the best that Hollywood can do?
This feeble excuse for a comedy made me angry, and if you have any cherished cinematic feelings for the quartet of actresses at its center, you may feel angry, too.
8/10 Review, the film made me cry towards the end, beautiful Hollywood ending filled with Hope. Perhaps a film for the older crowd, but really a delightful film to watch. Plenty of good laughs, and solutions to real life struggles with dating! Fun. Wonderful performances.

I am glad there are romantic driven movies starring women in their 60s and 70s, I really think Hollywood needs to realize that women don't just stop needing love when they turn 40. This being said, Book Club isn't reinventing the wheel. It's a cheesy, cute movie with great leading women however overall not a great script, not that funny and a strange excessive use of terrible green screened backdrops and bad photoshop on many an old photo.

If Book Club can honestly be more than what it brings, then I could honestly consider it okay to recommend. Of course I found the film to be pretty generic for what it brings since anyone can make a movie about a book club and it'll be tons better than what Book Club delivers. These longtime actresses deserved way more than just a generic film.

Contrary to the film's position on the matter, the "old people can be crude too!!" theme remains as dead as these characters' sex lives. It's one step away from Rappin' Granny at most times, but there is a fairly well-done "friendship among older ladies" story under all of it. But don't expect the Golden Girls, these ladies are pure tin.
