An uplifting indie film, in every sense of the word. As someone who has some experience in Research, no film captures that beautiful feeling like this one. (My field was Concrete, I am a Civil Engineer).
This may as well, be is the best film about research of all time. The characters feel like real people. Research students are mostly underpaid volunteers, that are just doing it for the love of it. However this makes the experience frustrating, and undervalued. To feel un-rewarded
Work in labs, can be lonely and tiresome, extremely methodic. Doing things that are very alike, over and over again. In the search of this new thing. The existentialism behind the pursuit of knowledge. This film really captures, how this little discoveries, or just the possiblity of them, are the things that keep us going.
In movies we always see this big budget fancy CGI rooms. With all kinds of technology. This is the first time the equipment looks like something, an average working person. Could afford.
And then learning it was made with a super small budget. Knowing the struggles of indie film-makers, this makes the movie even more inspiring and awesome.
This film is in my Top 10. It proves less is still more in film. It deserves far more attention than it received, and the reviews whining about dialogue (that was actually decent and mostly necessary to flush the plot out)) or minor technological details concerning astronomy & astrophotography are probably the same folks happily being spoon fed by Marvel, Star Wars, or worse: Ancient Aliens. If you check you’ll see their reviews for this film are their only reviews, so take that for what it’s worth… It’s an indie sci-fi film based primarily on hard science and it punches wayyy above its weight. Keep looking up and try to be less cynical.
+ves Some great performances and a gentle build that **** me in at least.
-ves Overly long, and a finale that just doesn't quite warrant the long build up.
A superbly watchable movie. The director managed to keep the suspense right to the end. The ending could have been more spectacular but still it's quite an intelligent film.
There was so much useless dialogue in this movie that I could not wait for it to end. They played out the friendship drama way too much. The use of the "slow zoom in" to the characters' faces during dramatic scenes was extremely overused. I want my two hours back...
