Crimson Peak's atmosphere crackles with sexual passion and dark secrets. There are a couple of monsters (supernatural and human), but the gigantic emotions are the most terrifying thing onscreen.
This is a film of tactile decadence, such a rich sensory experience that it's almost suffocating.

Hauntingly Beautiful Gothic Romance
Guillermo del Toro is a director and artist whose films fall into two distinct categories: big budget English language blockbusters like "Hellboy" and "Pacific Rim" and lesser known, low budget Spanish language horror films like "Devil's Backbone" and "Pan's Labyrinth". His latest film, "Crimson Peak" is what happens when these two worlds collide, in other words, a big budget English language horror film.

Del Toro’s predictably impeccable production design and tonal flourishes help bring the film to life, aided by strong performances from his leads, especially Jessica Chastain, who gives the otherwise reverent proceedings just the right amount of jolt.
Unsurprisingly for a Del Toro film, the production design is the real star of Crimson Peak.
A curious hybrid of grim fairytale and gory horror, del Toro’s ninth feature is striking but sorely lacking in surprises. Great ghosts, but del Toro is capable of so much more.
Crimson Peak ends up feeling like a bit of make-work, a project to keep the visionary filmmaker busy until something that truly sparks his passion comes along.
The film by the stylish fantasist Guillermo del Toro looks marvelous, but has a vein of narrative muck at its core.
Starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain and Tom Hiddleston comes this wonderfully dark and original gothic romance. Exceptionally creepy although borderline excessively gory with the perfect atmosphere throughout. More importantly it doesn't rely on cheap jump scares that other ghost stories bombard you with. I loved every minute of this, by far Guillermo del Torro's best English language film, a must see for anyone who's a fan of his work. Highly recommended.

Despite its solid cast and rich references, it's nothing more than just a mediocre gothic romance. Stephen King commented that the movie was "majestic and very scary", interesting. It’s true that the genre of the movie isn't just horror. However, it must be admitted that it is very difficult for many reasons to treat fear as a theme and as a theme today. In a very superficial summary; In the early examples of cinema history, themes such as religion, psychology, etc. were used as an element of fear, and it was successful. Then, with the development of technology, visual effects integrated into the world of the movies, the first time it was used, it succeeded to create a scary atmosphere, yes, but then the audience got used to it and not effected by it anymore.
In the end, neither the visual effects nor the themes could be turned into an element of horror alone. Now the success of an horror movie (if we just look at it superficially from the eye of the spectator) is able to blend each element in moderation and with a very solid plot (an example worth watching: It Follows (2014)). Also to use up-to-date elements that can directly appeal to perception.
