Amiable to a fault, with gags both broad and gentle, Oliver Parker’s pic prompts sporadic chuckles rather than guffaws.
The risk-averse approach to the remake extends to the humour. Pratfalls and benign double entendres (“I saw you slip her a sausage!”) rub shoulders with familiar gags and catchphrases which have been lifted wholesale from the original series.

Simply an old fashioned family movie - enjoyed by 11 year old grandson, his 39 year old father and grandparents. Plot and characters entirely suited to theme and period, technical special effects replaced by superb Yorkshire scenery. Zeta Jones played a totally creditable role as a German spy, with the expected buffoonery of the Dad's Army characters. Would not be surprised if this movie does not receive top reviews from the "professional critics",as it lacked any foul language, nudity, sex scenes or gory violence, but we just wish there was more of this type of family entertainment.

It has a strong, game cast but this is karaoke filmmaking, trading on nostalgia rather than breaking new territory. Affable but forgettable.
Dad’s Army bleakly suggests that even the best source material in the world can only take you so far.
The top-notch cast keep calm and carry on, but this TV remake is a waste of everyone’s time.
Dad’s Army is hobbled by too much broad slapstick and labored clowning.
It’s hard to escape the sinking feeling that this is a waste of talent – and that this is a good-natured, well-meaning but pointless kind of Brit-comedy ancestor worship, paying elaborate homage to a TV show that got it right the first time.
After seeing this film with negative expectations, I can safely say I was wrong. This film may be very similar to the original sitcom, but I personally had a great time! A classic style comedy, Dads Army is a really good movie!

Genuinely chuckle-worthy sunday afternoon type of fare. An enjoyable nod to the original series - keeps the spirit of the characters without the cast doing impressions. Keeps a good pace for feature length plot. You'd have to be having a really bad day not to enjoy whats on offer here!

Who do you think you are kidding, Mr. Viewer, if you think this movie is gonna be anything original?
At the very least, Dad's Army is a good try. It targets the original fans of Dad's Army a bit too much, and the result is that while it's funny when it is and the acting and characters are absolutely spot-on, the comedy is fleeting and the plot is too thin and predictable to justify making a movie out of it. The beginning and ending are quite interesting save for a few odd bits, but everything in between is just pointless, predictable nonsense.
Whilst the fleeting comedy is enjoyable, the rest is bogged down in schmaltz. If you have a deep-rooted nostalgia for Dad's Army then you might like this film for the pure nostalgia value, to look up from your chintz armchair and put down your teacup to point and say "Oooh, look at him! He looks just like Arthur Lowe!" but if you're a relative newcomer like I then I suggest you give this one a miss, since not having that 30-year-old ground knowledge will take away a significant amount of the enjoyment. It falls into the trap of being dead-on for a diehard fan of the source material whilst introducing nothing new and as such being not very interesting for newcomers.
All in all, Dad's Army is a passable, predictable but still mildly entertaining old people's film with nothing really new or interesting, getting most of its appeal from its schmalziness. Unless you're a Dad's Army afficionado, in which case this is absolutely perfect for you, then my suggestion would be to get it on DVD from a charity shop in a couple of years' time and watch it after a marathon of the original series.

Dad's Army is a major disappointment. the cast is great and could potentially play the roles but script fails them repeatedly. there are funny jokes in there especially with Michael Gambon as Godfrey but they fall down more than they hit home. it's climax is the point at which this no longer feels like it's source material and I just didn't entirely enjoy it but i will say it wasn't the disaster i was expecting.

What were they thinking when they decided to try and replicate something that could never be coppied or to even get close to the magic of the old series? It must go down as one of the worst decitions ever made in the film industry. There are talented actors in this , why they accepted parts in this abysmal project only they will know. They cant be short of money. Whatever the reason it hasnt done any of them or their career,s any good by being in this unfunny film. Some things should be left well alone.. And dads army and the great charismatic actors that made this one of the best tv series ever made is one of them .shame on you and all that made this pathetic film. One of the worst british fims ever made. Dont waste your time or money on this , go and watch the tv series.
