In 2022 it’s a true gift seeing a film so unafraid of being as lurid, provocative, and unabashedly horny as Deep Water. Perhaps it took a seemingly retired master of the genre to resurrect the erotic thriller, and hopefully this somewhat buried release won’t cause people to miss it, or for its cultural footprint to not stand the test of time as it deserves.

Infelizmente me enganei.
Deep Water contains some earnestly committed performances, a ridiculous car chase, a snail emporium, and a sparkling teaser for Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde.” The dynamic between her and Affleck is fascinating: not ridiculous enough to be camp, but not far off.
Deep Water has its pleasures, some of which are of the inexplicably daffy variety . . . And when you compare Deep Water to ... well, just about every other movie available right now, either in theaters or streaming, it really does feel like a singular sensation.
Just occasionally, Lyne brings the right kind of flash, brash and trash to this fantastically silly and unbelievable story. But the film plods along in such a disconcerting way: there is no ratcheting up of tension, or plausible psychology.
Deep Water, despite an all-star team behind it, barely makes a splash. Although it is being billed as an erotic thriller, it’s tedious and clunky. Trips to the supermarket are more exciting.
As someone who knows what is stuck to someone in the sickest way, the movie was related to me. Hopefully, I didn't kill someone. One day, I found a way to get out. It was tough, but I did it. The mentality of "I need a strong man" is toxic. It makes you do things you never accept because you want to be someone who looks vital to that person. Even doh you are not that person. Ben Affleck's character is the victim here. But he is crossing the line for this toxic mentality. If you see the line, leave immediately. None of us, I am talking about men, have to stay masculine or satisfy a woman to make them feel they are under the control of someone. Even if you are into "idea" or in other ways, if you are "sapiosexual," you can still give over yourself to this virus. So, the movie, at least for me, was realistic. I remember throwing the flowers that I brought for her out of the 17th floor. Yeap. It's the same scene, but mine was more effective, to be honest. And other things that are related to which I don't want to talk about. So the point is not everyone will like this movie because most people don't know what a relationship is, and most of all, they don't know the toxic ones. And I hope you won't. For that, the movie will be personal to everybody. I liked it because I saw my -could be an exaggerated film version. A sane version of a relationship is the partners should be reliable and be "someone" in their life. The idea of "power" should cease to exist. The most important one that no man should pay attention to is the mentality of "I need a strong man who can satisfy me and insist me do things that I don't want to." This idea is toxic. Leave. Right away.
What's up, Streamers! These movies just keep coming fast and furious like those sequels and spin-offs. It's hard to keep up, isn't it? The streaming services seem to drop multiple new titles weekly. Anyway, we are catching up with Deep Water, the so-called erotic thriller from erotic thriller master director, Adrian Lyne, and starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. There's been a lot of chatter about the salaciousness of this one - mostly because of that failed Affleck-de Armas relationship, but who doesn't like a good erotic thriller. Here's how hot and bothered Deep Water got us.
Deep Water follows the story of Vic and Melinda Van Allen (Affleck and de Armas), a socialite couple in a small town, who have an unconventional marriage. Vic and Melinda seem to have an understanding whereby Melinda has lovers outside of the marriage and Vic accepts her philandering in order to keep the marriage intact. Vic isn't entirely satisfied with the arrangement and tries to discourage Melinda's boyfriends from continuing their trysts. When one of Melinda's former lovers goes missing, Vic threatens Melinda's new boy toy by claiming to have killed the former boyfriend. The arrangement becomes untenable as Melinda's escapades become more public, the community begins talking about the Van Allen's and the missing boyfriends, and Vic's jealousy bubbles over. Sexy hijinks ensue.
An erotic thriller needs two things to work: sexiness and thrills. Deep Water is lacking in both areas, unfortunately. First, Affleck and de Armas are a good-looking couple. Although there are some sexy moments, the movie doesn't sell what it has advertised. There are moments here and there between Affleck and de Armas and some with de Armas and the other boyfriends, but hardly enough to justify the "erotic" thriller label - nothing truly memorable. On the issue of thrills, I blame the writing for this because the game is given away pretty early. Affleck is brooding around corners, he's saying obvious and threatening things, and the air is let out of any tension there could be. While Affleck is good at being menacing, the performance and the screenplay dilute whatever intrigue there could have been.
On the other hand, there are some hilarious things that occur throughout. Erotic thrillers can veer into some campiness. Deep Water veers there. I'm just going to say two things: snails and Tracy Letts. You have to see it to believe it. It doesn't make sense, but it does become comical.
Ultimately, Deep Water is a predictable movie that doesn't provide the sexiness or thrills that should overflow in an erotic thriller. The movie has very few sexy moments and there are some laughs to be had, but the story doesn't really make any sense. Nevertheless, you might watch this one if you 2 hours to kill, so get your handful of popcorn and dive in.
Deep Water is more of like a frustrating movie than a bad movie, i hate when a movie making a victim as the bad guy, and that's what they do with Vic played by Ben Affleck, Melinda played by Ana De Armas is a woman that literally cheat on everyman while she still with Vic, Vic with his whole passion try to accept it and when it's too much, things gone wrong, seeing a married woman or man cheating on somebody else is already frustrating, and the movie is even more frustrating when they make Vic as an innocent a bad guy, i'm a easliy mad person with this type of movie, i watch a lot of movie with this type of story and most of them is either i'm getting a meltdown and just stop the movie or i'm still made it till the end, Deep Water is not making me have a meltdown, i'm still passion to see how they gonna end the movie though with a very frustrating experience, and with the whole craziness that happen throughout the film, i'm only depending it on the ending, if it's satisfying then i will give a more positive review, if it's not then it was the opposite of that, Deep Water ending for me is still unsatisfying but it's still in a good way and i wouldn't get too specific about it, and with that i'm not going high and i'm not going low, just in the middle of it, in terms of a performance itself, they were all amazing, they're daughter Trixie played by Grace Jenkins is the best, she's not only innocent as a character she was also have a terrific performance, overall Deep Water was kinda wasted this two amazing cast with the whole story, like i mention in the beginning, Deep Water is more of like a frustrating movie than a bad movie.
Deep Water is a very odd film. Very odd and very frustrating, it presents a premise thats similar to Gone Girl but doesn't carry a-lot of thrills or much of anything related to an erotic thriller like say Basic Instinct. It's not necessarily a bad film, I can't really say that by any means. It's well acted but the screenplay is just so sloppy that it drops plot points almost as quickly as it introduces new ones. Affleck and Ana de Armas make the material work but Lyne's past-his-prime direction and (very) sloppy screenwriting make the film feel more like a missed opportunity than anything else. For me, at least.
A decent movie that starts off this lifeless is trying to lull you into complacency to set you up for a big twist. I just kept waiting, watching characters I didn't care about... And then the movie ended. My rating would have been worse but for Ana de Armas's "it" factor.
