It takes some getting used to, and there are sequences more awkward in their motley-ness than pointed. But overall, it’s an effectively crashing intimacy created by the performances (especially the fizz and warmth Schilling and Rosendahl have together), Claudia Wolscht’s restless editing and Hanno Lentz’s camerawork. Erich Kästner’s slim novel originally translated in 1932 as “Fabian. The Story of a Moralist” is a brilliantly astute rendering of life in Weimar Berlin, straightforward and yet surreal, witty and perverse. To tackle it in cinema would seem like an impossible task, and while Dominik Graf’s Fabian – Going to the Dogs is to be commended for getting quite a lot right, the movie is blowsy where the book is succinct, awkwardly paced and portentous where Kästner is consistently rhythmical and unpretentious. A tram here, a car there, a little attention to wardrobe, and contrasting haircuts (a Hitler/Himmler buzz was the dead give-away somebody was a Nazi) and we get an idea of what this world looked like. But “Fabian” fails to immerse us in that world, and being as leisurely as a limited series in its pacing, loses the urgency of what to later audiences can only be a “cautionary” tale. Algo nesse filme me lembrou o "Apolo 10 e meio" do Linklater, não pelo enredo em sim, mas por tentar retratar uma época a partir de um cotidiano mais simples, cujas pinceladas históricas estão ali para nos lembrar, neste caso, o horror do nazismo, sem exatamente se aprofundar no tema.

Fabian é um jornalista na Alemanha da década de 1930, que a aspirante a atriz, fica desempregado. Suas relações e amizades são típicas de uma juventude da primeira metade do século XX, e é interessante como são mostrados lugares e bares do submundo de Berlim, com direito a lésbicas, drags, drogas e muito álcool. Não sei até que ponto tais cenas são anacrônicas, no entanto, a cada alguns minutos, seja em matérias de jornais, informações no rádio ou mesmo uma batida nas ruas, percebemos a clara sensação de insegurança e de medo tomando as ruas de Berlim.
O romance é tudo meio repentino, mas o que me ganhou nesse filme foi o tom lírico e realista que muitas das cenas são feitas, chega a ser não convencional em alguns momentos, ainda que esteja contando uma história clichê, não o faz de maneira óbvia.
Outro ponto positivo é que as tragédias de ocorrem no filme (duas mortes impactantes) não tem a ver diretamente com o partido social nacionalista nascente, embora todo aquele ambiente de instabilidade, tenha sim causado impacto psicológicos.
Em suma, é um filme bem gostoso de assistir, os atores estão muito bem em seus respectivos papéis, Dominik Graf consegue em quase 3 horas realizar um filme não cansativo, divertido, reflexivo e emocionante.… Expand
