It’s an intimately scaled film that still demands to be seen on the big screen; never once does it leave the impression that it would be best suited for a streaming platform. Hyde’s refined and attentive direction, Bryan Manson’s crystal clear cinematography, and Stephen Rennicks’ sparkling score have done wonders cultivating the sensual tone and texture. Funny, refreshing and full-on sexy. Surprisingly suspenseful for a movie that mostly takes place in one room and with lots of chit chat. Seems to make it all the more intimate. Emma Thompson is so "Emma" and BRAVE. Also doesn't hurt that Daryl McCormack is meltingly handsome. Yum. Hubby andFunny, refreshing and full-on sexy. Surprisingly suspenseful for a movie that mostly takes place in one room and with lots of chit chat. Seems to make it all the more intimate. Emma Thompson is so "Emma" and BRAVE. It's not getting there, it's how that matters: An entertaining and fresh reflection on sex in middle age, in a four-act comedy, with a mini-cast featuring an unusual but courageous Emma Thompson.

Some are quick to mention that it is a Covid production as if that alone can automatically limit the quality of a movie. It doesn't and it didn't: the restraints of that context gave the film simplicity and honesty, enough room for character development and a closeness to it's characters that is so ironically rare in the age of reality tv and social networks.

It may not be that cinematic, but "Good Luck To You, Leo Grande"is a whip smart two hander with outstanding performances and a funny and moving script by Katy Brand
that addresses issues most films won't touch with a barge pole! Be great to see it as a stage play

In a way that I found pleasantly surprising; Good Luck to You, Leo Grande is a film for adults that has several features that make it remarkably frank about intimacy and sexuality. It's perhaps a little sugar-coated, but it's a film that seeks to treat its viewers with seriousness.

I've never understood why some films that deal with similar themes tend to trivialise and simplify the issue. Given that almost the entire film takes place in the same location, you need your actors to have chemistry and charm to keep you engaged in what is basically 95% dialogue, and both Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack manage to deliver strong performances that keep you invested in their interactions because of the effortless way in which they occur and unfold. Yes, it's a pretty modest film that plays in a relatively safe area, but it doesn't lack quality, nor does the exposition of its theme falters.
I actually found it much more competent and interesting than I expected.… Expand
