It's pretty basic here. You have a Bill Plympton movie. You know what to expect – complete rampant insanity from the mind of a mad genius.
If Plympton is making pastiche, he's also having a laugh at a universal experience that for a lot of people was probably pretty crummy. Apparently, it was a little crummier for him.
Famed animator Bill Plympton's legendarily skewed aesthetic and worldview are in top form here, bringing life to a script that plays like "Carrie" on a wicked acid trip.
Too glib to qualify as satire, Hair High nails the high school experience.
While his static backgrounds and stuttering character movement aren't likely to win over traditional animation fans, Hair High reps the high end of this "Sick 'n' Twisted"-type toonery.
Animator Bill Plympton's seventh feature is a must-see for fans of his often witty, always scabrous, hand-drawn work.
When Plympton's freak flag flies, Hair High delivers the same whacked-out weirdness of his shorts. The rest of the film simply stretches out the simple premise and marks time between his ideas.
