I am divided by this movie. I enjoy the set up, characters and story. On the other hand it destroys much of the lore, is not that original and has some plot holes or out of character moments. It is best described as the movie to the TV series with the addition of Christopher Lambert. It has also connections to the first movie and many flashbacks that have implications for both Mac Leods. It is hard to describe the problems without spoilers but I will try my best. The lore breaking moments can upset fans and the resolve is best seen as a red-con. They fixed it with the Produces cut after fan complaint and made a happier ending. A bit of the movies problems are related to development hell. If you don't know this term is used when a movie is heavily edited or changed a lot before, during and / or after production (All three can apply). Warning signs include: Changing directors, delays, actors / directors who are tight-lipped and words like divisive /not for everyone / woke etc.
If I checked it correctly there were multiple changes for the setting story and it should be for some time be a connection to The Raven spin-off series. The story itself is a good vehicle but not that original. The characters and their development / motives are believable for most times. For me as fan there are some inconsistencies or out of character moments. The setting and costumes are good. I noticed that I hesitate for my final verdict and just keep writing. Overall as fan I enjoyed the movie and with the lore destroying thing removed in the cut I can approve a good rating to the movie. Without I would lower my rating by 1-2 points. However I say this is for fans and others will probably rate this lower and I can see why.
And next time around... show the courage of your lowbrow convictions and get back to the gonzo, unapologetically senseless mayhem that made this saga so much fun in the beginning.
Oh god! A fourth Highlander movie! I really don’t like this movie but I got to admit. It is better than all of the sequels. I actually thought some of the action scenes were very well choreographed. I also enjoyed the villain in this movie. He actually felt like a threat to Duncan and Conner. The reason why I rated this movie at 2 is because of the awful acting and writing that doesn’t make any sense.
