"By the way, if you’re wondering about the subliminal appeal of the dragons — why these animated creatures look adorable on screen and not menacing at all — here’s why: Their movements, behaviors and expressions are based on cats. Once you know, it’s the most obvious thing in the world." ... Read full review

"If you’ve spent any time with these characters, it’s hard not to get swept up in the saga, and it’s easy to be moved by the bond between Hiccup and Toothless, who is, in effect, a very loyal dog who can fly and harness the power of lightning bolts." ... Read full review

If they made a solo Toothless film, which please don’t, I would see it. Since the very first film that came out in 2010 the animation in this film series has just constantly been getting better and better from each entry and in my opinion this one probably had the best animation. Whenever you saw water it looked like real water, all the buildings had the look and texture of real ones. Even the people looked somewhat like real people. All the colour in this film is vibrant and bright that it helps bring you into this world. Also, the lighting in this film helped with what you should feel in that scene. If it was more bright and colourful you knew that it was a happy scene compared to a dark and grim look that would represent a sad moment in it. The characters in this film felt real because they had flaws and made mistakes. Since the first movie to now you see all of these characters grow up over these films and it’s great to see them all mature into these grown adults by the end of this film. All of the action scenes in this film were just breathtaking and were probably better than some of the live action fight scenes you see. The camera angles that showed the action no matter and knew where to focus at what point and time was just amazing. Of course, the music in this film, which was done by John Powell, was intense and easy listening to. I can easily see myself listening to it. The message in this film is great and everybody should follow it. I was going to complain about the subplot between Toothless and the Light Fury but then I realized that it had to happen to help with the main plot and so it really wasn’t a subplot. The humour in this film is subtle and doesn’t over power the film. When there is humour it’s placed in an appropriate place. This isn’t a spoiler because it’s in the trailer but one of the funniest scenes is when Toothless is trying to flirt with the Light Fury. I think really my only problem with this film is the villain Grimmel. He just wasn’t a fully developed villain and this could be because they wanted to keep him a mystery but after the last movies great, one they needed to step it up in this film. I highly recommend seeing this film in 3D due to the breathtaking visual effects. In the end, this film was great and is a great wrap up on one of the best trilogies to date. Also, the ending to this film made me actually cry. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unforgivably bad. I've been a fan of HTTYD for years, and they abandoned every last scrap of the series' heart, integrity, and purpose for a glossy and oversaturated Disney rip-off that can't hold the plot together to save its life. Characters behave in whatever way Dean DeBlois requires them to with scant regard for their characterization five minutes in either direction, let alone the past two movies. Plot holes fly fast and thick. Loyal, confident, snarky Toothless has been reduced to a literal slobbering pet, Astrid the inexplicably jealous girlfriend who chastises Hiccup for expecting Toothless to ever come home, Valka an airbrushed-free-of-wrinkles Barbie who dispenses advice on how to be a supportive woman. The Light Fury, our love interest and Toothless's "call to the wild", couldn't be more of a non-character if she tried. Soft and round as playdoh and covered with pink sparkles and heart motifs, the film's crew is unapologetically open about the fact that she only exists to be "feminine and graceful" and offer Toothless "the promise of propagation" despite being an entirely different species. Everything about Toothless seems to disgust her on a visceral level, yet we're supposed to support Toothless when he commands his entire flock of dragons -- down to the last hatchling -- into hunters' cages when she's held hostage. She's never even given a name.

The threats aren't threatening, the characters are shallow and mean-spirited, and the titular Hidden World is barely shown. The villain is a bleached out Snow Miser who succeeds in harming no one; his mind-controlled Deathgripper dragons look scary and thus we're not supposed to care when Toothless murders them for being under the sway of the same chemical as his new girlfriend. The warlords are incompetent boobs and the armada of thousands goes down without a single casualty. And I could forgive all of that, every last bit, if not for the film's reprehensible Aesop; that all the things it preached to us in previous films were actually childish, selfish, and naive. Friendship means little to nothing, different people need to be segregated for their own safety, and your dream of making the world slightly better is stupid. Just sit down and have kids.

Shame on you, Dean DeBlois.
