Overall: This is a movie design for one purpose. To be fun and enjoyable, and that it is. It isn't deep, it isn't original and it definitely doesn't have any memorable performances (aside from Sonny, who is perhaps the only character with some depth.) But again flaws aside (brain at the door) it is allot of fun. Expand

It's entertaining throughout, visually striking, and occasionally even poignant. Perhaps it's true that the movie doesn't have very many original ideas, but the old ones are still given a suitable update here. It's well paced, never boring, and actually quite memorable. Sonny, the main robot character, is a pretty impressive c.g.i. creation. What's most impressive about him is that he actually feels like a character with emotion, and not just digital eye candy. Smith also gives a decent performance in the lead, even if it's not quite up to par with his work in I am Legend. Why wasn't there ever a sequel? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In the long run of movies, this is one of the best. It's got everything a good movie needs: Character development, action, psychology, a good story, loopholes, trauma, good acting, and a big twist ending. OK, so good movies don't need all those things but I, Robot had them all. It's like a Chris Nolan film except not as dark and complicated and psychological (It was still psychological but not as much as Chris Nolan). My favorite part was probably when Spooner was driving his car and the trucks came and got in front of and behind him and started releasing robots that jumped his car and completely annihilated it, but the climactic scene where the robots burst through the ceiling and they had to shoot them was awesome too. I think that the character of Sonny really got my attention because every second he was on screen, he was developing his character through his emotionless dialogue. For example: "I think it would be better not to die, don't you, doctor?" The way he said it emotionlessly, yet somehow passed the fact that he was sad was just one element that added to his character. I also think that Spooner has a good story regarding his paranoia of robots and his arm is worth while too. In the end, Vicky's logic was, yes, "undeniable" but at the same time, unfair as robots are robots that need to listen to humans. If they don't we all die, which is a lesson learned for the future: if a robot says no to you, scrap it. I also liked Lanning's theory of robotic evolution, that robots would group together instead of standing apart. I think Will Smith had some nice remarks too. Expand

There are not very many movies that have everything you look for. I, Robot is one of those rare films. It has action, suspense, drama, romance, robots, Will Smith shooting stuff, and great lines.

I hate Will Smith... but the plot and action are terrific. This movie actually made me respect Will a little more. Besides, he delivers some great lines. Such as when he sneezes then says, "I'm sorry, I'm allergic to bull...." Classic.

I don't know why this was panned by critics - a great envisaging of Asimov's work, and cool special effects to boot. Spooner is a great character, and there are even comedic moments. Really enjoyable.

You can't blame people for going to see the film that the studio was pitching in the trailer, finding a different movie, and being disappointed. This isn't an action thriller, but a character study. Also, it didn't have the infinite budget of a Lucas or Spielberg film, and I'll bet it didn't look as good on the big screen as it does on DVD. Lots of fun references to every robot movie in the past. Lots of fun detail of it's future non-dystopic (for a change) world. Expand

Some scenes have such great camera work, it made me dizzy! The story is incredibly entwined from beginning to end and leaves you in suspense and also the thing (or person) you think is the bad guy is not what you think when you first see it! Qualities: Sci-Fi, cute moments, suspenseful/thrilling, great camera work, incredible affects, complex yet still easy to follow plot, clever twists, compliments Sci-Fi, originality put into the classic 'Robots turn evil', action, puts a new look on a few things. Through the plot was though a feeling of thrill at times which could of been extended greatly but the thrills I found moderately good. The biggest facet of the movie was the CG. The robots moved in an interesting inhuman manner which I found quite enjoyable to watch, as well as the androids appearance. The progression of the storyline was a tad sluggish and didn't leave much time for us to enjoy a decent amount of action. But I do consider the movie a good movie for it's visuals and watching the finishing of the somewhat sluggish plot, it was a very interesting ending, as well as watching the action and CG. It's a nice movie to have in a collection at least to pick up and watch when in the mood for such a movie. Expand

To me, that is a non-issue. At face value, this film is very entertaining, very well directed by Alex Proyas, very well acted by Will Smith and Bridget Moynahan, and very interesting when it comes to the questions it raises about creation and robots. It stays relatively constrained and believable when it comes to its science fiction ideas and though this may not be the way things are in 2035, it is relatively believable that this could come to fruition. The few plot twists that are here are also interesting and very much throw you for a loop at times. It is well paced, well written as well, though my main complaint was some blatant product placement for Converse and Audi. These do not usually bother me, but the Converse ones were particularly obvious and clearly shoehorned in later on. Overall, I, Robot is not a seminal science fiction by any means, but is a very, very well made one that entertains in spades and features enough heady thrills and a very well thought out future to make it a very good film. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros:

- Will Smith kills it as Detective Spooner
- The humor in this movie is well-placed and properly put together
- The movie looks beautiful
- The action is so much fun to watch
- This film isn't brainless like most action films made around this time
- While the whole dystopian future story may be a common story in many films, this film makes it pretty interesting
- The part where all of the robots go against the humans is very well-done
- The whole mystery aspect of the film is played-out rather well
- The scenes with Sonny are very interesting

Cons:

- The film kind of follows Issac Asimov's book with the three laws of a robot
- Shia LaBeouf, while not exactly annoying, I could do without

Summary:

Don't listen to the critics. This movie is a beautiful, well-paced, amazing action film with good humor, a couple of one-liners, great casting choices, and some of the better action I've seen in years.

The always likable Will Smith gives an always solid performance. But also Bridget Moynahan, Chi McBride, Bruce Greenwood and the voice-acting of Alan Tudyk are good in this movie. The special-effects are a little dated but who cares; this movie is from the year 2004. There are a few moments with great camerawork especially during the very enjoyable action scenes (and there are a lot of action scenes).
This movie's plot was very interesting in the first half, but lost track in the second half where it took a very cliche turn. But I didn't care anymore for the plot at that point (towards the end). Great action scenes and a decent plot in the first half make this movie a very entertaining thrill-ride with good performances, okay special-effects and actually some really great music too, which was worth mentioning.
