The rhythms are Latin; the beats come from the heart. Miranda’s character-based story culminates with a twist that illustrates that home isn’t a locale, it’s a state of consciousness.
All this is big, busy fun and while one might wish for some a bit more grit in the charm offensive, the catchwords here are feel-good and broad appeal.

I loved all the character's struggles and how they overcame them. I also loved the fact that the songs were so intricate and fun to have on replay despite me not knowing any Spanish. I liked the camera angles they used and how they used them so effectively throughout the movie to make it look and come together perfectly.

"In The Heights" is a musical that actually TRIES! It's 2 1/2 hours of actually good music and other stuff. Unlike Disney musicals, This actually has maturity in it as well. Let the party start!

This is how In the Heights won me over. Because in spite of its flaws — like lopsided twin romantic subplots where the lead characters are overshadowed by their best friends, or cloying lyrics that play on both the literal and figurative meanings of “powerless” — it’s ultimately a work of affection for both its subject and its medium.
Basking in the film’s ceaseless swirl is as intoxicating a moviegoing experience as one could want these days, a burst of communal joy (and sorrow) that serves as an effusive welcome back to the world.
It’s a movie that feels like hope as actual hope stares us smack in the face. We are almost there. In the Heights didn’t ask for this responsibility, but it will forever be remembered as the right movie for the right time. It’s the kind of movie that will make you want to dance in the streets. And after this year we’ve all had, we all deserve to have our moment dancing in the street.
An aspirational immigrant story that hits most every mark of the genre, but flows and overlaps and grows dense in unexpected ways.
As a movie, I thought Jon M. Chu did an incredible job bringing In The Heights to cinematic life. There’s nothing wrong with the actual production or cast. It’s all great, but my issue is with the source material, specifically the songs.
So far, my favorite movie of 2021. This made me fall in love with musical films (even musical plays).

IT IS TOO LONG!
Listen, it is really well done. The music is good, the story mostly nice. But they could have cut each musical number by 25% and lost nothing. I was looking at my watch and at one point it was 9:45, I looked again and it was 9:41. When my date and I got up at the credits, the usher came over and said, “you’re going to want to stay and wait for an extra scene at the end.” I looked that man in the eye and said, “I can assure you, sir, that is not what we want.”

An alright film, consisting of well-shot scenes and decent choreography. A definite step-up from Hamilton, comparing the pacing and plot. The atmosphere of the setting and shots however feel like a constant Coca-Cola ad - take that as you will. The music is most definitely its most shining feature as you should expect for a musical. Overall, not a terrible experience but not a movie I would be coming back to watch again.

I had no expectations when I went to see this movie. Only knew that it was a musical and expected to really enjoy it. Wrong! I had no idea that the “music” was mostly rap and that there would be no catchy melodies to remember. For me and my companion, sitting through the first hour was torture. Hardly any plot, no wonderful music to enjoy, no feeling of wanting to dance in the aisles. Very, very disappointing! We left at that point. Totally not my cup of tea!

My family really enjoyed Hamilton, having seen the play multiple times as well as the Disney airing of the production they filmed. So, we were really looking forward to this as well.
I have no idea why the critics aren't being honest about what a bloated mess this movie is. It's WAY TOO LONG (even after they shaved like 25 more minutes before sending it out). The singing is overall not great and often more sing-talking than actual singing. When the grandma has the best number in the movie with the best singing (it's REALLY GOOD), there's a problem since she's a pretty small part overall. The storylines are of the "very special movie of the week" type and are resolved in unsatisfying and unrealistic ways - or not resolved at all. And we have to talk about how UNNECESSSARY Lin Manuel's shaved ice character is in the movie. He **** and KEEPS SHOWING UP, offering nothing to move the story along. And then the final insult- he's in an extended after credits sequence that was overplayed and unfunny. Yeah, it was with a Hamilton actor, but who cares? At least give the audience something good in the process. It was just another ego scene in a movie that didn't need ANY of them.
I know Jon Chu can direct a great movie - Crazy Rich Asians was WAY more enjoyable than this. So, I don't know what went wrong, but it's DEFINITELY wrong.
Like I said, we saw Hamilton multiple times, both live and on film, but I have zero desire to watch any part of In the Heights again. That should tell you everything you need to know.
