Hardcore horror audiences won’t find much that’s frightening in Insidious: The Last Key — there’s not even that wonderfully unsettling shriek of violins under the title this time — but as a delivery system for more great work from Lin Shaye, it more than accomplishes its mission.
The fourth installment of the Insidious series has deft scares and some nifty twists, all of which don’t entirely distract from how strangely inconsequential The Last Key ultimately feels.
Love it!!!!!! Elise is back in her role once again!!!!! And she is the heart of this film which is why I truly can say this is AN AMAZING HORROR FILM!!! How many 74 year olds do u see taking charge of a franchise??? And this is a horror franchise which is just brilliant! Excellent story and acting especially the second half of this film!!!! Go watch it!!
With Shaye’s performance as its anchor, the movie is often a perceptive character study, at least until it’s hijacked by the same bland trickery that so often fogs up horror movies with more to offer.
n the hands of director Adam Robitel, The Last Key hits all the haunted house markers. Lights flicker, flashlights die at inopportune moments, floors creak, and shadowy figures scuttle across the background. But mood is all the film has going for it.
In the end, it’s left to Shaye to carry the film, and she does so with aplomb. The “Insidious” franchise may be running out of places to go, but Shaye appears to be just getting started.
Despite the indomitable Shaye’s best efforts, however, new director Adam Robitel is rarely successful in shaking the cobwebs off this increasingly creaky franchise: The Last Key is wildly uneven, confused and confusing, and it appears to leave the “Insidious” saga written into a corner yet again.
So far there is still none that can have the magic of the first Insidious, and none that can have the most engaging story than The Lambert's Family, Chapter 3 didn't work for me, but The Last Key have enough terror elements from Elise backstory, her family especially her evil father was just terrifying and menacing enough, Lin Shaye carrying the whole movie again in the most terrifying way possible, Leigh Wannell and Angus Sampson fills the light entertaining stuff once again, always works, the Ted Garza things was interesting, and the most importantly there is not a lot of stupid build up/jumpscare stuff in it like Chapter 3, while the movie was anti-climatics, and the movie also already loses the originals magic since the second one, The Last Key was definitely way better than Chapter 3, and the story was overall engaging enough, and it's scary in a way that is not stupid and cheap, and the characters are well written, Insidious: The Last Key is a rare good 4th installment movie in a horror franchise.
For me, The Last Key was the weakest part of Insidious franchise. First two parts were so different but afterwards the franchise turned into a normal horror franchise. I am not saying that this part was bad but it was very simple which you don't expect from Insidious franchise especially after watching first two movies.
What I liked about this movie was that it added some more depth to the character of Elise. They told her back story. Her character moments are quite good. Some jump-scares, particularly one or two, were good ones.
What went wrong that that after 2nd part the franchise felt like an average horror film.
If the franchise is to proceed further, they need to bring back James Wan but it would be better to stop the franchise right here. Overall, the movie is almost unnecessary unless you want to know little about Elise's childhood.
