But that was about as excited as i got. The movie itself was.......good, just.

Firstly the action was great, exhilarating, tense, well choreographed. The acting was good, Matt Damon himself does a stellar job on his return to the character, the supporting cast was good too. The story was decent, but i couldn't help but feel it was useless. Nothing gets accomplished at all, Bourne just finds out a few things about his dad, there was really no other major threat. The movie itself just felt recycled.

It was still a little enjoyable but it really wasn't necessary to the series.

Bourne is lured out of hiding by his ex-CIA boss (Tommy Lee Jones) in an attempt to stop a dangerous data leak. Once it starts rolling, the film's momentum is non-stop, but most of the stunts have been done before (with the exception of a crazy chase scene thru Vegas that defies physics). The operations machinations keep the audience wondering what's next (and sometimes what's happening), but there aren't any surprises. Nothing new or exciting here, but the movie still supplies fast-paced, vigorous entertainment. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When is enough….enough ? The Jason Bourne franchise is terrific. Matt Damon is terrific. In this movie, Tommy Lee Jones is a terrific bad guy. Cast is terrific so why only a 6 ?? Three 10 minute chase scenes are two too many. The 1st chase was good; motor cycle up and down stairs, weaving in and out of an on going civil riot in Athens. Julia Styles on the back..its was exciting but the next two were pure overkill . Enough of the chases scenes and elaborate property damage. 2016 directors do not understand or appreciate subtlety in their films. Less is more . Other than that, film had good pacing and left a little hook at the very end to entice interest in the next segment Expand

The plot slacks considerably under the weight of Paul Greengrass' shaky cam, unnecessarily large action set pieces, and nauseating action towards the end of the film. The Bourne films have always been remarkably built around their plot, not just huge action scenes. Here, however, this is thrown to the side for a bombastic, too loud, and over-the-top film that instead of being a unique action spy film, turns this entry into the beloved franchise into just another cookie cutter action film. The acting is solid across the board and whatever plot that exists is solid, but the film seems far too eager to just skim through the story and get back to explosions. Even worse, Greengrass' affection for shaky cam leaves these fight and chase scenes completely unwatchable. The original trilogy was far more grounded and balanced, but this sequel is far too reliant on action and casts aside any semblance of a plot as a result. Expand

This movie should be called "CIA chases man". That's all it is. A minimal plot doesn't necessarily mean a bad film (think Fury Road) but this movie is soulless.

Such good action blurred by blur....such bad everything else.

The action is on par with the other movies, but the camera is so inconsistent and shaky its often hard to follow . This is normally done to hid an actors inability to fight well but even at his age he is really in shape and a good fighter.

However the story is horrible for some many reasons...forcing the dad into the plot to felted that , forced and changes a lot of the history in an attempt to give the character motivation , Just like what they did with the girl, the problem is its a girl who in all the past movies there was barely more then a minute or 2 of interaction between them , no friendship , no chemistry , just no motivation.

Lets not even talk about the 50 or so GIANT plot holes and force feed answered treating audiences like idiots. Starting with a World class hacking facility with rerouted IPs and hardware capible of helping break into the CIA that doesnt even so much have a UPS , backup batteries or a generator....millions of dollars in hardware...and not even a 5 minute back up power...... Then a flash Drive that literally says encrypted on it , a note book of plot objectives so clearly written out they might as well of just had a voice over with internal mono log explaining things step by step like we were 2 and A Dozen other character motivations that made no logical scene

It's very fast paced, but much too long, and the storyline plays out with a disappointing predictability. The enigmatic performance from Damon is good, yet the lack of dialogue means that we fail to care about the characters. The cinematography is very handy-cam heavy, and while I wasn't bored per se, neither was I on the edge of my seat. A somewhat mediocre experience overall. 6.36/10 Expand

Early on in the film we see Bourne living off the grid, partaking in street fighting to keep himself sane, even allowing himself to receive a beating to combat his guilt, however this interesting direction for the character is short lived and soon he is thrust into the same old scenario we have seen before only this time for a rather contrived motivation. Typical screenplay tropes litter the script and at times the story feels muddied and ham-fisted. A sub-pot merges into the A-story without really feeling developed and characters suddenly have different rules of engagement depending on what best serves the story. Having said all that the action scenes are directed with perfection as you would expect, and the fight sequences are as realistic as ever. Damon Vs Cassel is the biggest draw and when they share the screen the outcome is explosive. A chase through the streets of Vegas is solid, although not up to previous film's final chases, and the opening Athens set piece is high octane stuff. The film is a solid action film but unfortunately holds no patch to the initial trilogy. It does wipe the floor with the Renner led spin-off but you can't help but feel this flawed entry was unneeded. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have always loved a good Jason Bourne movie (not the Renner version though). I was looking forward to this one, as I was keen to see where it would go in terms of a storyline. It's entertaining, Matt Damon is still easy on the eyes and that action is passable. Unfortunately, those are the only things that are memorable. Bringing back the whole Treadstone plot was a bit of a yawn, and Tommy Lee Jones as the government baddie disappointed. See it if you want, for old times sakes. Or skip it. It won't make a difference either way. Expand

Though I still believe the Bourne Ultimatum is the best in the series, the movie still delivers with some action-packed sequences and thought- provoking characters. Directed by Paul Greengrass, who was also at the helm with Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum, the movie is able to bring back some of things that made the original Bourne trilogy so good, in particular the incredibly awesome action pieces that are sprayed all throughout the film. It also showcases Paul's signature use of a shaky-camera, and though unconventional, proves to be useful in many situations.

Almost a decade after the end of the Bourne Ultimatum, Bourne (Matt Damon) is still hiding, isolated from the world, where he only joins up in the occasional street-fight. But, his involvement begins when former contact of Bourne, Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles), hacks into the CIA server in attempt to expose information. Files concerning the identity of Jason Bourne and how they attempt to take him down brings him out of hiding.

The film boasts a stellar cast, which includes Matt Damon, Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones, and Vincent Cassel, all who of whom suited their characters well within the story. The story itself wasn't as intriguing as many of other Bourne films, as there were some minor plot-holes, but it didn't concern me that much. Its ability blends a decent plot with amazing action provides a fulfilling experience for the viewer, in particular, those who are fans of the series.

Feels like one retread of the same formula too many. Bourne is found, needs to uncover something, run from CIA white collars in a computer lab, face off with a rival agent, car chase, fist fight, confront the shot caller in the suit, disappear, been there, done that. Can't they get any more creative with the premise? At least Legacy tried branching out a little. My biggest disappointment is the return of the overdone shakycam. Ffs, even the text you're supposed to be reading is all but illegible it's so bad. Anyway, the action is alright (Damon's age may be catching up with him), but to its credit the climactic car chase is pretty damn awesome. Altogether uninspired, though. Expand

Since Jason Bourne is back on his feet and this time this movie felt badass and at the same time flawed.
After watching Jason Bourne, I already know that there is gonna be a next Bourne movie probably the last before Damon retires his character on the big screen. Although, the same director from the Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum is back but after watching this movie I was disappointed with the story. I would like to debunk this review into a pros and cons sections about my exact thoughts on how I feel about this film:
PROS:
- Matt Damon at it's finest
- Intense Action and Quite Gripping Sequences
- Car Chase Sequence
- Outstanding use of Visuals and Birds Eye Perspective
- Paul Greengrass is back!
CONS:
- Disappointing Story
- Poorly Written Characters
- Confused Plot Consistency
- Editing (Of Couse)
- Lack of Intelligible Writing

Overall, the latest Bourne entry is back but didn't exceed our expectations after the biggest success of Ultimatum. Although, you can still appreciate the action sequences itself rather than plot. And I hope that the next Bourne entry will impress...

To be fair, I went to watch this movie it because I watched the rest of the franchise. It appears to be a curse in franchises, things started to go downhill after a few good ones.
For this movie, it is okay, the plot is quite boring, Matt looks really old, less combats and fighting but more running, car chasing (my least favourite).
Apart from the good-looking actress, there was really much of a highlight in the movie.
In conclusion, if you are a Jason Bourne fan, go watch it. If you are not a Jason Bourne fan, there is something wrong with you. Nonetheless, after watching this movie, I am sceptical about the next Jason Bourne movie if there is one. I probably will still watch but I hope not to be disappointed again..

My expectations of home rentals are lower, so if you're like me in that way, you'll enjoy it more at home. When you actually go out, park somewhere, stand in line, pay for a ticket, and stand in line again to pay for overpriced popcorn, then sit with someone's head partly in the way, you expect more for your trouble. The best Bourne movies for me are the first one and the 4th one, the one Bourne isn't even in. This one is on par with 3 but maybe not as good as 2. The problem I had with this is that, look, I know I'm not going to get tons of character development, but in place of that I at least want a plot with revelations and twists and turns. But you get none of that here. You just get a simple excuse for a plot with 3 or 4 words of dialogue once in a while to push the thin plot onward, but 99% of the movie is insane action, and in this case the camerawork was so close up all the time that it was disorienting and a little nausea inducing like the Blair Witch Project. The Blair Witch Project promoters liked to brag that viewers were throwing up in the theater - which suggested the movie was incredibly gross and frightening - but in fact people were puking because the camera work was hand-held and looking at the ground half the time and jiggling and bumping all over so that people got sea sick. Jason Bourne isn't that bad visually but it's pretty bad. Handheld cameras and close shots even during action are fine as a tool in the toolbox to use here and there to get very intense, to highlight a climactic, moment, but when you do it all the time it becomes just a meaningless blur, and that was kind of what you had here. That said, the acting, what there was of it, was good. Perhaps I give it a 6 rather than a 4 or 3 simply because I've seen the previous Bournes so I knew what I was in for when I entered the theater. I'm calibrating it against other Bourne movies rather than against other action movies generally. Expand

I'm also over chase scenes in movies. There is nothing they can show me in a chase scene anymore that I haven't seen already. The chase scenes in this film (and there are two) are especially horrible, with overly edited scenes that consist of many one second shots each filmed with a hand held camera that wouldn't stop moving. NOTE TO HOLLYWOOD - PLEASE STOP WITH THE SHAKY CAMERA ALREADY! The plot is also unnecessarily convoluted for the first hour. There are good moments too. The acting is good, when they are allowed to act which isn't very often in this frenetic action pic. It's always fun to see Bourne outwit everyone else. The hand-to-hand fight scenes were pretty good too, except for the fast editing and moving camera. It was pretty good for the matinee price of $6.25 that I paid. Tommy Lee Jones was okay in such a predictable role. Vincent Cassel's asset didn't really measure up to previous henchmen. Alicia Vikander was practically redundant. The climatic car chase was too over the top and poorly filmed.

The best thing about the movie was the way it explored the psyche of Bourne as a patriot that deep down maybe wants to be working for his government again. Hopefully the character and franchise get a better send off if another installment is made.

New officials, new operations at agency, but the same old Bourne!

I thought the original films are meant to be a trilogy, but when filmmakers saw money, they went ahead with the fourth in a new direction. So now with this, it has returned to the original storyline. The Jason Bourne, whose quest to find the answers was over. Yet, a new chapter begins with this like another trilogy is on making like the 'Star Wars' with a new storyline and adventures.

Still the theme remains the same, like running and chasing. So the story was just a one or two liner. But if you like the action sequences, this has got plenty of them to entertain you. That's should be a main reason, if you want to see it, other than that the film was average kind. Matt Damon's return for the title role was the best thing happened in here with the director of 'Supremecy' and 'Ultimatum'.

I think Alicia Vikander's role is yet to exploit and that would be in the next two films. Looks like an interesting combo between her and Matt, so waiting for the official news. The same formula for this is what disappointing, though not a bad flick. After all, that's how we know Bourne series. So go for it if you are up to date with this franchise, because there's going to be at least another two films if my guess is right.

But if you're looking for the series to change pace at all or even just introduce compelling new variables into Bourne's background, story, or development, you will be sorely dissappointed. This latest Bourne film's worst flaw is that it serves really no purpose to the greater narrative of the franchise.

Bourne discovers evidence, Bourne gets into car chase, Bourne punches information out of someone, Bourne gets hunted by people in a room filled with computers, Bourne confronts evil G-Man. You've seen it before, and you'll see it all again here. Too much deja vu, not enough nuance to justify anything above a 6/10 from me.

Compared to Ghostbusters, this is a far better two-hour experience, but compared to other great flicks out right now like "The Infiltrator" and "Star Trek: Beyond", there's really no impetus to see this unless you're a die-hard franchise fan. Caveat emptor is the best way I can sum this up.

There's nothing redeeming about this movie, Damon is not an action star.
Vikander is completely miscast and implausible in her role and shoehorning another antagonist into the franchise, as great as Tommy Lee Jones is, wasn't the best idea.
It would've been interesting if they could have cast someone else in the lead.

Carefully spelling most things out for the viewer and dumbing down everything else. The hacker stuff reminds me of the 1995 Angelina Jolie classic (in a ridiculous bad way) "Hacker". The depictions of technology being often incorrect and outright laughable.

The movie is entertaining in parts, but ceaselessly falls on its face as it tries to be too intense. Too dramatic. And as for the non-stop always moving camera, its past the point of getting old, its annoying and disruptive. Find a freakin tripod. Put the camera on it. And just step away! Just for a few seconds, please!!

And then there's the casting of the young smart hacker CIA agent. This is a move straight out of a Michael Bay playbook. Alicia Vikander is Greengrass's solution to the hot model scientist from a Bay Transformer Flick. Its a ridiculous casting choice and it just undermines the plot of the whole movie. In a Bay film, it almost makes sense because the movie is inherently ridiculous. In a movie that takes itself as serious as this one though... its just bad.

If you're a fan of the Bourne movies, go ahead and watch this. Just don't expect much.

It's the same old Bourne Identity fistfights and unusual one-punch KOs and the omniscient Jason who can walk right past 100 secret agents and not get caught. That was doable the first time. And the second time. And not so much the third time. And definitely not the fourth time. Now for the 5th film...I'm tired of it. Nothing happens in this film. I'm not going to spoil it. Matt Damon is back in this entry, and so is director Paul Greengrass (Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum), which means the style and feel of the original films is there. Jason Bourne is entertaining, but is riddled with cliches, and feels like a somewhat irrelevant entry in the franchise. The problem for this film is that many of the biggest plot points are featured in other modern spy films, and at this point are somewhat overdone.
Jason Bourne is action packed and offers fans of the originals more of what they love. The film is action packed, despite that some of the action has too much shaky cam, which is common within in this franchise, but annoying nonetheless. The acting in this film is one of the best parts of this movie, as Damon is great in his return to Bourne, however Alicia Vikander and Tommy Lee Jones are both also great in their roles, conveying complex people very well. The major problem with this film is that it’s riddled with cliches.
If this film had been made 5 years ago, it would have been timely and groundbreaking, and while it’s still timely the subject matter is somewhat worn out. Jason Bourne latches on to the same theme as various other spy films today, which is how much can we infringe upon privacy for security. That isn’t to say Hollywood needs to abandon doing films about the ongoing privacy vs security argument that is plaguing our society today, but they need to make it original. If you need an example, Captain America: Winter Soldier was a far more entertaining and well-rounded version of the same film, that came out 2 years ago.
Beyond being cliched and not really offering anything new to the privacy vs security argument, this film feels detached from the other Bourne films. By that I mean that the original 3 Bourne films had an overarching story, and they all felt as though they were necessary for that over arching story, this film isn’t part of that story. The story never really feels connected to the original films, and instead feels like an unnecessary cash grab. Above that the film refuses to offer anything new to the franchise, recycling the same cinematography and themes of other films.
Jason Bourne is a fairly entertaining action/spy film, and it comes at a time when spy films are all the rage, because the public knows so much about the imperfections of the system. That being said this film piggybacks on other, better, films so as to continue Jason Bourne’s storyline. The film is action-packed, well-acted, and loaded, but is also unnecessary, recycled, and frankly lacks a fresh look problem. That being said fans of the original franchise likely will enjoy this film.

Okay before I talk about "Jason Bourne" let me talk about the other films first, as I think this is the perfect time to quickly talk about other ones, because I like the Bourne trilogy.

The Bourne Identity was a great movie not because of the action or anything, but because of the mystery surrounding the main character. Matt Damon was the perfect choice to play Jason Bourne as I can't imagine anyone else taking that role.

The Bourne Supremacy did a lot of things better than Identity, in terms of the ending, the emotion and just how violent it is. The one thing that no one talks about in Supremacy is how smart it is of delivering the emotion from characters. There's no sad music or overly dramatic dialogue to make you feel something; no, it was all from the actors who had to deliver that and they absolutely do. It honestly made it more effective.

The Bourne Ultimatum was just amazing and I do think it's one of the best action movies in the last decade. The movie is non-stop action and it's so filled with energy, after it's over you need rest from it. The way the movie ends, I thought it was the end for the franchise. But many wonder if another movie was to come, but many seem to think that "Ultimatum" was the last one.

Oh and I'm not counting "Legacy" as part of the series, because lets just ignore that one.

But here we are with "Jason Bourne". Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass return to the franchise and while l thought this installment was an enjoyable one, but it's not as great as the others, unfortunately.

The best part of Jason Bourne was it's opening action sequence with an incredible motorbike chase during a riot. It was quick, intense, exciting and insistently hooks you. The rest of the action was pretty damn good and fights are once again brutal. The one thing this movie does not disappoint on is it's action.

Matt Damon once again dose a great performance as Bourne and after all these years it doesn't feel like he missed a step.

Tommy Lee Jones is basically TLJ, but he was still good. Even with his motivates not being that strong and the character itself isn't anything that compelling.

Alicia Vikander and Julie Stiles were both fine in the movie. They did a decent performance in this and it's always nice to see those two in movies.

Vincent Cassel is an excellent actor and he makes for a perfect hitman to go after Bourne. While the gifted actor is great in this, I wished there was more of him.

Everything was going great....until the actual story of the movie starts. The story evolves around people being concerned about privacy on social media and most of the movie dedicates to this plot. This is when the movie goes down hill and it doesn't take long for that to happen. This story line is so uninteresting and not at all needed for a movie like this. I know this movie is trying something different and there is somewhat of a revenge story here that's not just from the hero perspective but the villain as well. Nothing about this was riveting and it had no emotional weight to it.

The writing was pretty lackluster and not really compelling. Again, the social media plot line really grinded this movie down. This should have been a full on revenge movie and while that may be repetitive for some, but hey, it's got to be better than this. What breaks my heart is that there were plenty of times where this movie could have went into a interesting direction, but instead chooses to stick with the social media crap.

While I thought the Las Vegas chase was pretty enjoyable, I did think it was a little over the top. What I like so much about the previous Bourne movies is how the action scenes feel so realistic and I'm not saying it's like real life, but it was realistic enough to keep you on edge during those sequences. But here, it goes full out nuts with cars flipping and flying in the air. There were so many times where Bourne should have died and the villain as well. It's completely mad.

Overall rating: I enjoyed "Jason Bourne" on an action movie standpoint. There's a lot of things to like in this movie with the directing, the acting and the action, but judging it as a film overall, it was pretty meh. Compare it to Identity, Supremacy and Ultimatum, this was unfortunately a massive step down from those three. This movie should have been spectacular but it sadly wasn't.

At least it's better than "Legacy"

Jason Bourne is the fourth outing of Robert Ludlum's amnesiac ex-assassin and it's by far the weakest in the (now) ongoing franchise.
Matt Damon reprises his role, but is in effect playing a completely different character. Everything we've come to discover about him in the original 'trilogy' is jettisoned in favour of some completely unattached tale involving a whole new group of CIA spooks out to stop him.
It's very 'by the book' writing, and suffers immensely by not having any defined references back to the man we know.
OK the character of Nicky Parsons returns, but her role is solely to offer up this new character angle (and subsequent memories that weren't mentioned or referenced previously) regarding Bourne's father and his involvement in the original Treadstone Program that created the assassin Bourne would become.
There's oblique references to Bourne's (aka David Webb's) rationale for joining up due to his father's death and him wanting to be a patriot... But it's merely offered up as filler inbetween the two narratives that flow as the film bumbles along.
It wouldn't be so bad if the acting/direction were good, but they're not. We're in shaky-cam nirvana, not a single shot in the movie seems to be captured using a fixed camera. As for the acting, Damon's on auto-pilot, as are Tommy Lee Jones and recent Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (a bad piece of casting, as she's FAR too attractive to be an ambitious, young CIA uber-tech nerd!!), it seems to be nothing more than a guaranteed paycheque and I suspect in Damon's case... As he's also a producer... He's picking up a substantial financial reward for that too!!
Throw in some terrible CGI effects on the long distance shots (nothing in the background looks real in those cityscapes) and a woeful score.... And you're left with merely another generic action/spy/cyber thriller.
One to watch if it pops up on Netflix and you've run out of episodes of Westworld.

The prior three (to hell with Jeremy Renner) were a great fusion of action, suspense and thrills that wrapped up nicely. Lots of stern people, barking orders with an impressive (delusional) sense of self confidence. It worked for its time--let sleeping dogs lie.

...But no, we can't help picking away at anything and everything until it bleeds--knowing when to walk away IS a skill. So, here we are with another Bourne film after being promised by the Director and Lead Actor "never again". What has nine years absence bought us?

Not a lot. The formula is familiar: improvised action scenes, assets, car chases, war room, etc. Nine years hasn't changed Paul Greengrass's desire to fall back on familiar tropes. In order to continue providing stakes, a sudden insertion of Bourne's father (never mentioned previously) gives him the thinnest of reasons to pop back on the radar, and start racking up the kill count/damage bill.

Someone forgot to tell the screenwriters involved how different the world is today. Absurd tech-talk reigns supreme, with part of the story evolving around a generic Facebook-alike known as Deep Dream working with the Government to eavesdrop on its users, in the interests of national security of course. The film flashes all over the world as Bourne continues to work his way toward the "Boss", completely immune to local law enforcement or customs, avoiding and infiltrating with superhuman accuracy. Most of these criticisms are in effect in the previous films as well, the difference being, we've grown out of this style of film since whilst the movie is still stuck back there.

It's not a bad movie, but it's not worth the time and resources taken to bring it back as is. Signs of an interesting premise are hinted with Alicia Vikander attempting to play both sides in order to engender his trust and bring him in, but it counts for nought in the end--just another familiar trope.

I remember Steven Spielberg once exclaiming that they had waited for the right script before they jumped into "Crystal Skull", and look at what we got. A lesson, amongst many, that teach us no matter how experienced or professional; no matter how many previous successes; nothing and nobody is immune from errors or mistakes in judgement. This is one of those.

Not that Damon and Greengrass’s return isn’t welcome – it most certainly is – but after the thrilling, pulsating and well-written original trilogy (The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum), this instalment feels like a money-grab, as it is not only unnecessary, but Bourne’s situation is actually made worse and he ends up in a worse position at the end than he was at the beginning (Nicky Parsons is dead and the CIA are after him once again).

The film is also lacking in those small, clever moments in the original trilogy where Bourne might use his intelligence to set a trap for incoming CIA agents or throw assets off his trail. For instance, in The Bourne Supremacy, after killing a former Treadstone agent, Jason opens the gas connection and puts a magazine into the toaster, so that when the magazine catches fire, the house will explode. Or when in ‘Ultimatum’, he calls the local police and tells them he hears gunfire, so that when the CIA come for him, they will be intercepted by the cops. Such moments are not in Jason Bourne, which takes away what makes Jason Bourne Jason Bourne. I guess this is all part of the fact that Tony Gilroy has not come back to write the movie, which is the biggest problem.

However, these cons aside, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and the performances were great. Matt Damon was as good as he’s ever been in a ‘Bourne’ movie, and Alicia Vikander was a good, strong new character who’s blank, expressionless face made her character difficult to read. Tommy Lee Jones delivered the good, no-nonsense type performance we’ve come to expect from ‘Bourne’ antagonists. Julia Stiles was good for how much of it she was in, before she was killed off in a reenactment of ‘Supremacy’s opening.

Speaking of the opening, the section in Greece was an astonishing achievement for any action movie, with pulsating chase scenes and well-choreographed action. The only issue was there were literally arrows pointing the asset in Bourne’s direction, which slightly undermined the tension in those moments.

Jason Bourne has some thrilling action sequences and the cast delivers strong performances, which proves that even a second-rate ‘Bourne’ movie is better than most action flicks nowadays.

Not sure. After the failed attempt at a spin-off with Bourne Legacy, which had Jeremy Renner in the lead role, this instalment with Matt Damon back as the lead, suggests an effort at course correction for the franchise. Granted Damon reunites with Paul Greengrass who helmed the immensely successful sequels to Bourne Identity (2002) which was a grittier re-imaging of the softer James Bond franchise. Also the Bourne movie trademarks are there; quick-paced walks through streets as Bourne is followed by people who are out to get him, spectacular car chases, hand-to-hand combat, high-tech espionage. Tommy Lee Jones (as CIA Director) and Alicia Vikander (as CIA Head of Cybernetics) give good performances. The problem with Jason Bourne is that the plot line was not engaging enough, not helped by the long interval between the last entry in the franchise, Bourne Ultimatum (2007) and the current one (2016). For this, they called back Paul Greengrass who, this time, ensures the direction and script. The film is not brilliant, however it manages to fulfill the expectations of the audience, although Greengrass has lost its freshness and intensity, offering us a listless and tiring effort.

The script begins with Nicky Parsons' attempt to publicly expose various CIA operations. She contacts Jason Bourne, who tries to dissuade her from doing so. The CIA, however, was following in her wake, and it didn't take much for them to suspect Bourne's intentions and attitudes, and go back to hunting him, as they had done before. From there, what the film gives us is more than what we've seen in other films in the franchise. The script, however, seemed simpler and more direct in the way it presents itself, without the twists and subtleties that previous films sometimes had. Another thing that needs to be said: in this film, the tension and suspense are not as palpable as in previous films. That, in fact, is something I regret, it would have made the film work better.

To the delight of many, and after his disappearance in the previous film, Matt Damon is back to the main role, one of the most important roles in his acting career. He is impeccable and perfectly at ease with the work and material. However, I've felt several times that the rest of the cast doesn't have the material or time to partner with him. Vincent Cassell, for example, is an excellent actor and is very good at this kind of characters, but his character is basic, merely a sketch, and the actor doesn't do much because he doesn't have much to do here. Tommy Lee Jones also has reasons not to miss this movie. Equally talented and competent for action characters (who doesn't remember his performance in "The Fugitive" a few decades ago?), he simply hasn't received decent material and his character is underdeveloped. Alicia Vikander appears just to give a feminine touch to a movie full of testosterone.

On a technical level, this film manages to maintain the quality standards of previous films in this franchise. It features beautiful cinematography and satisfying camera work, despite a little overuse of the handheld, with those blurry images. It knew how to make the best use of the filming locations, carefully chosen, and the effects of light and shadow. The editing work leaves something to be desired, giving the film an uneven pace, with scenes that take too long for no apparent reason. As in other films in the franchise, the strong technical bet is the special, visual and sound effects used in the action scenes. Everything is done with great rigor and gives the film a pleasant feeling of realism.

The action isn't as goodJason Bourne sees Matt Damon returning to franchise in just over 9 years and this film wasn't worth the wait because while it's not terrible this film has loads of issues which people should know before watching it. The action isn't as good as any of previous Matt Damon Bourne films, and the action in this film is almost to cartoonish to fit in the Bourne trilogy and what we have seen prior this film. There is a plot line about an app which only sets up the finale, but is more of a distraction to the film than anything else. This film has nothing which makes it great compared to other the other films in series and this film is a big disappointment. There are some things I like about this film though, I think the film has some excellent pacing and some great tension, and this respect it feels like a Bourne film. The other thing I like is that the actors do very well with the poor writing which they are given. If any more Bourne films are made by Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon return to this series, I would also like writer Tony Gilroy to return because I think the Bourne films should have a better writer to make a better film.
