Featuring a riveting, fully realized, and Oscar-worthy performance by Joaquin Phoenix, Joker would work just as well as an engrossing character study without any of its DC Comics trappings; that it just so happens to be a brilliant Batman-universe movie is icing on the Batfan cake. While Phoenix is always more than watchable (his scary-Fred-Astaire dance moves, born from Arthur’s habit of watching old movies with his mother, are both mesmerizing and disturbing), “Joker” really has nowhere to go. At the end of the day, Joker comes off as Scorsese-lite in the same way that Phillips' last movie, War Dogs, did - albeit, with great acting from Phoenix to elevate it, but also a sense of self-seriousness that borders on self-parody and pretentiousness that War Dogs did not have. Read full review

Phoenix is acting so hard you can feel the desperation throbbing in his veins. He leaves you wanting to start him a GoFundMe, so he won’t have to pour so much sweat into his job again. But the aggressive terribleness of his performance isn’t completely his fault. Read full review

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. We all know critic reviews are worthless. Most critic sites are paid off to give good reviews, which is something everyone has been aware of for a long time.

The movie is fantastic. Its too real. We see a seriously mentally ill man being cast aside by society. After losing his access to therapy and medication, we see him slowly descend into darkness. The tone of the movie is largely dark and sinister. The turning point is when he decides to commit suicide. The elated giddiness of an mentally ill person finally making this decision is only relatable for someone who has gone through the same thing. He takes power into his own hands. The music and lighting becomes more cheery. The second turning point is near the end, when he realizes once he has taken the power back over his life and finally feels happy, he no longer wants to die.

He felt ignored by society and once he takes a stand against the absurdity of it, he sees there are other people just like him. They see him. The negative reviews are by the exact same people the movie is calling out. Or they expected another generic action movie and got a dark drama.

This movie didn't have to be about Joker. It honestly takes away from it. I'd say that is the only flaw. The writing and attention to detail is fantastic. Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic. Just watch the movie, its great.… Expand
