JT LeRoy may have been an elaborate fib, but Kelly finds a genuine pearl of wisdom in the web of deception.
Anchored by its two excellent leads, the movie is sympathetic and, for the most part, unsentimental.
Yet despite the efforts of its stars and the inherent juiciness of its source material, the film falls flat when it should bounce with surreal glee. Perhaps it’s because Kelly is only telling half a story here.
Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy is a lukewarm examination of what might have been a hot topic — and that means it risks being overshadowed by the real-life soap opera playing out around it.
JT LeRoy isn’t a bad movie, and with these actresses it’s certainly worth seeing. It’s a passion project for Knoop, who co-wrote the script (songs by her brother, long divorced from Albert, all over the soundtrack) and has been promoting the film.
For a movie about what’s going on under the elaborately staged surface, it’s pretty much all surface, right down to its shallow observations about gender fluidity, queer identity and the creative freedom of the alternate persona.
Where Dern and Stewart kick-start something worth exploring, the movie around them is pleased spectator instead of engaged participant.
