It’s less a story of the supernatural than one about a party on the wrong side of town, with hints of danger, interesting strangers to meet, and an overall cool vibe that even lingers the morning after.
Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon is a lark, a contradiction — a lurid, violent, caught-in-the-gutter movie that’s also a nimble and knowing tall tale for adults.

The movie played with my expectations the whole time and i felt satisfied. Cool colours, cool vibe, cool atmosphere

It's always a relief to have stories set in unusual places (in this case, New Orleans) that talk about local problems and turn the city or town into another character. However, this movie has nothing in particular to say. Its comment on motherhood, misanthropy, and marginalization feels undercooked. The urban tale about the intersecting lives of an exotic dancer, a police officer, and a fugitive from an asylum falls short in every sense. Not even the fantastic element ends up being attractive. I hate to admit it, but Ana Lily Amirpour hasn't made anything interesting since 'A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.' A one-hit wonder, perhaps?

With Mona Lisa, Amirpour officially graduates from her position as an “up-and-coming” voice to a full-fledged genre auteur. However you title her, her hyper-stylized explorations of gender-based violence, punky female protagonists and obvious love for her craft make her one to keep watching.
This is a midnight movie/B-movie-type work that knows exactly what it is––there’s no pretensions of “elevated horror” here. Mona Lisa is smart, politically aware, and reaffirms a bit of faith in Amirpour’s talent.
Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon sizzles like a heated cajun fairytale that tells humanity how it is, brimming with Amirpour's distinctly creative voice that keeps me coming back for more.
Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon offers street-food for the senses, served with lashings of hot sauce. It’s hardly nutritious but it tastes fine in the moment, wolfed down on the run.
The movie, more often than not, has the look and feel of an edgy music video, which wouldn’t necessarily be a problem if it weren’t also oddly boring.
I'm very split on this movie. It's definitely my least favorite of the other two Amirpour movies that I've seen (The Bad Batch, A Girl Walk Home Alone at Night). Not much depth to the plot or the characters, the pacing is sort of meh, and given the particular subject matter I would have preferred the ending to have a bit more of an explanation or resolution to it. It did have some pretty good visuals at times and pretty good acting especially by Kate Hudson. If you really like Amirpour's other films than this one is probably worth watching at least once, it definitely won't feel like a total waste of time, but ultimately it's much more forgettable than her other movies.

What a terrible movie. Bad script, poor over-the-top acting that made no sense, terrible storyline if you can find one. Just a total waste of money.
