That go-for-broke violence has always been a core component of Mortal Kombat, and this reboot succeeds because McQuoid and his team remember that, and have the self-awareness to acknowledge it. It isn’t a flawless victory, but it is lizard-brain fun.
It may not be a flawless victory but the new Mortal Kombat movie is a fun time for fans of the game franchise.

Viewers interested in martial-arts action are bound to find the combat-with-a-C to be lackluster in that way that hand-to-hand fighting tends to be when it gets drowned out by digital effects. More likely to have fun with this latest Mortal Kombat are Sam Raimi enthusiasts who can appreciate the comedy in over-the-top geysers of fake blood, which the film unleashes with increasing regularity as the fights get more serious.
A B-movie that would benefit immensely from some wit in the script and charisma in the cast, it’s not as aggressively hacky as P.W.S.A.’s oeuvre, but it runs into problems he didn’t face in 1995: Namely, the bar has been raised quite a bit for movies in which teams of superpowered young people have fights to save the universe.
Mortal Kombat is within its rights taking the material semi-seriously, but does so by taking itself a little too seriously, given the rote nature of translating the game -- whatever its ongoing popularity in that form -- to the screen.
Aside from the comic-book movie supernatural brawls — with lots more blood and profanity — there’s nothing at all to this.
In fairness, you can say that Mortal Kombat is pretty much exactly what you expect it to be. It’s clearly meant as the first film in a renewed franchise. But for me, it’s game over.
Not as bad as painted. Certainly far above average compared to other films based on video game series.
Today we compare this to the first Mortal Kombat movie (1995) but at the time the first MK was much criticised. I remember that very few of us liked it and only many years later did it become a classic, undergoing a re-evaluation.
This MK will probably meet the same fate and only in a few years time will be really understood and re-evaluated.

Fun little film. One of the movies you throw on in the background when painting models or playing a card game. You have to shut your brain off for this film or you will be questioning everything about the lore and the MK universe. Nothing is really bad here, just things that don't make much logical sense. The worst part about the film is race swapping Raiden. I could not get over it and sticks out like a sore thumb. Still, at least it's not Rings of Power or Disney Star Wars bad.
The graphics are good. The fatalities and fights are fun and wish some of the fights lasted a bit longer. There's a bunch of nods to the game series; little 'member berries scattered throughout but it's not too egregious. I do like the characters in the film and think they are decently written and the actors did a fine job as well. No one came off as annoying or woke. In fact, I thought some of of the cast were pretty fun. I have a bunch of nit picks about the film which is why I gave it a six out of ten. It just needed more depth and logic to the story and a bit more character development. Don't expect an award winning film here. It falls around the average for me - and considering the little experience the writers and Director had, they could have done a lot worse. At least it's not CBS Star Trek bad.

Maybe if I played the games then I would enjoy this a little bit more but it still wouldn't be good.
