A smart, creepy, violent, funny, and modern vampire movie that benefits from some wonderful performances, a stunning visual texture, and music by Tangerine Dream.

Probabily my favourite vampire movie ever. I'm very keen on this genre when it is well made and this is surely a great one. Bigelow direction is so skilfull that I suggest you to watch this movie as soon as possible. This movie is a western, a love story and a vampire movie and it works in all of its aspects. Bigelow's masterpiece.

Bigelow's is a synthetic talent, in the good sense of the word: She
draws together a rich, imaginative range of cultural references (the film
noir, the Western, the horror movie, the love story) and narrative styles (the
lyrical, the expressionist, the action-based, the psychological), making

There are no gothic extravagances in Kathryn Bigelow's bone-dry, style-rich, noir-steeped vampire western. Instead it comprises a fascinatingly modern take on blood sucking mythology, shedding tradition to examine the creatures as human counterparts.
Bigelow's artful handling of the magic & menace of the night is hauntingly apparent.
This modern-day vampire movie is, to be sure, no masterpiece, but its suggestive narrative and dreamlike visual style are distinct improvements over those of such recent living-dead flicks as The Lost Boys and Vamp. And if Near Dark doesn't provide a complete answer to the ''necking'' question it raises, well, heck, it's an exploitation film, not an advice column.
Directed by Kathryn Bigelow with lots of dull spots, a few effectively intense moments, and as much gore as the monster genre usually calls for nowadays.
I heard about this movie from half and a bag and I was not at all disappointed. I'm kind of amazed by this movie because it feels like it had a low budget, but it punched above its weight all the time.While watching the movie I kept getting the feeling that this was supposed to sympathize. You know a normal guy getting hitchhike by a sexier woman into being part **** culture and a criminal environment taking drugs. I mean I think the vampires analogi for drug **** vampire family is so entertaining. I love how they were performed. I really enjoyed the lighting throughout the movie the way it's designed and look and when it gets violent it gets good **** movie just flys by it's fun the performances go all the way the week is one is the main character but I can still make it work. He is a bit bumbling because he's a Country Texas cowboys.I really like the take they have on the vampires where they are hopo murder was going from city for City it feels refreshing.

This is a dark and interesting alternative vampire movie. There were no points were I wanted to turn away from the screen. This is not traditionally scary; the fear comes from the band of the small number of travelling hungry murderous vampires who have seemingly been getting away with killing under the radar for decades. The action is thoroughly exciting and the style so downplayed that it becomes introspective making it even more interesting. Very well acted and with a vampire style never seen elsewhere. This is not a traditional fangs biting villagers type of affair - this is a very human story told at a breakneck pace with stunning visuals and explosive drama. Enthralling stuff.

Slow movie, childish, predictable, action oriented, without anything in particular .
It gives some 80's nostalgia but that's it.
In his defence it is a useful film to introduce newbies to some aspects of Vampire the Masquerade RPG ( Uneasy Coterie in moden setting for example)
If you are looking for some eighties vampire fiction there are better options like Fright Night or Lost Boys
