The temporal puzzle is enough to distract from the artless direction, visibly cheap set designs and tacky special effects. But if the expository scenes are any indication, his writing could benefit from some refinement. Read full review

The manipulation of time is my favorite form of Science Fiction, it also happens to be the most difficult to write. Alternate histories, time travel, and of course paradoxes, can very easily go from entertaining to confusing to unwatchable in the blink of an eye. There is a very fine lineThe manipulation of time is my favorite form of Science Fiction, it also happens to be the most difficult to write. Alternate histories, time travel, and of course paradoxes, can very easily go from entertaining to confusing to unwatchable in the blink of an eye. There is a very fine line between explaining too little, confusing audiences, and explaining too much, hence boring them to death with the scientific stuff. Lucky for us, not only does the new Sci-Fi thriller, Paradox manage to find that line, but much like it's story, it manages to come back to it over and over again. The story seems like a rather basic one, as a group of scientist are hired by a mysterious billionaire, to create a machine for the purposes of time travel. On this day, the group is pretty confident that they have completed the machine and will be sending one member, one hour into the future. The test works perfectly, only when the man arrives an hour into the future, he finds the lab is a mess and many of his colleagues are dead, hence the paradox. Will going back to warn everyone cause what he just saw or will it prevent it? Paradox is one of those films where it isn't about the acting, any decent actor could have been cast, it's the story that matters and the story was fantastic. The way they manage to utilize the machine and equipment that you never even noticed, or how they amp up the mystery by making everyone have that one thing that could make them a possible suspect, just makes the film that much more intense. This was honestly one of my favorite movies of 2016, and believe it or not, it was Written/Directed by a completely unlikely source. After seeing this, I had to know who wrote it and to my surprise, it was Michael Hurst, a guy who until now had only written some B-horror movies and directed some Xena episodes!?! This time he tried something different and may have found his true calling. If you love science fiction and a great mystery on top of that, you won't find many films that combine the two with the ease and satisfaction of Paradox.… Expand

What a sci-fi delight, this movie transforms low budget into charm. The movie is from last year, but I felt like watching a fiction from the 90's. Paradox is about a group of scientists who built a time machine and are about to test it. Paradox is about a group of scientists who built a time machine and are about to test it. Obviously, something goes wrong and that's where the movie gets really interesting (for me, at least). I love the discussion behind the paradoxes that time travel would cause and this movie satisfies several of my points of view. Even the contradictory ones, which left me even more entangled in the plot. The final twist is well articulated, brave ... And good! Low budget is visible in special effects, and maybe that's the biggest weakness of the movie for me. Some performances are pretty weak too, but I just bought the idea and ignored it. Oh, I loved how the clock is well used on the stage, always around as if to say "you can play with time, but you can't stop it". Anyway, very good, very recommended. An 8 would be exaggerated, 6 would be little. 7.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Paradox starts out with an interesting, if well-worn, premise: A character goes back in time to stop an event from happening. Fair enough. But the movie fails at almost every level to live up to the premise. Instead of crafting the tale well to make the killer a reasonable person, a bait and switch is done, letting you think it's one character, but it's really another. That would be fine, except for two things:

1) The person who *should* be the killer is shown early on. You even see this character putting on all the gear necessary.

2) The person the movie *wants* the killer to be literally can't be the killer.

*Spoilers after this point*

The person set up to be the movie's protagonist turns out to be the killer. But how? It's very clear when the protagonist goes ahead in time that they're *all* dead, including the protagonist. So if the protagonist died in the attack, how did he travel to 2029? And if, as the killer, he died in the elevator, you have the same problem.

The story doesn't make any sense with the time travel rules the movie made up.… Expand
