The indisputable star here is Johnson. She balances Anne’s dissonant scorn and sweetness with aplomb, her usual soft-spoken, sarcastic shtick perfectly suiting the character. Even when forced to do truly regrettable things, like wink directly at the camera, she exudes charm.
Persuasion is sufficiently bold and consistent with its flagrant liberties to get away with them. It also helps that the novel’s long-suffering protagonist, Anne Elliot, has been given irrepressible spirit and an irreverent sense of irony in Dakota Johnson’s incandescent performance.

The acting alone deserves an applause omg best movie I've seen on Netflix in a very long time ! Because time heals all wounds

PROS: This is one of the wittier adaptations of a Jane Austen novel, with lots of sly commentary to the camera and anachronisms that are relatable to the modern experience of women. The costumes, sets and cinematography are also notable.
CONS: Cosmo Jarvis is horribly miscast in the leading male role. His acting is awkward, he is thick as a dried sausage, and his interactions with the female lead are utterly devoid of chemistry.

This Persuasion chooses to wear its source material like a thin disposable skin, discarding many of the vital organs (brain, heart) and most ideas of subtlety as it goes. Austen may be immortal, but she's not inexhaustible; maybe it's time to tell another story and let her rest in peace.
Unfortunately, Persuasion isn’t a great movie, maybe not even a good one. But its problems are failures of filmmaking, not necessarily of adaptation: Cracknell, who has until now worked largely in theater, may make some choices that undermine her aims, but she gives no indication of being careless with the material—her affection for it comes through.
There are bound to be viewers less familiar with the source material who are enchanted by Persuasion. However, the modern touches are just too persistent to ignore, and they take away something that the movie urgently needed — genuine depth.
Persuasion at times seems embarrassed by its source material, or at least overeager to spruce it up for audiences that might not be able to handle a gentler pace. The result is harried and forgettable—the complete opposite of Austen’s quietest, noblest heroine.
Sadly Persuasion, not only the worst Austen adaptation but one of the worst movies in recent memory, delivers on all the agony and none of the hope.
Enjoyed this more than I thought, found the performances and characterizations full and well portrayed.

A drama without drama, huge waste of cast and story
Right after seeing a cut of Persuasion made by Netflix, I was aroused by his dialogues with the camera. I went to watch with hope. It will be a masterpiece or simply a disaster. Let's go to the review!
Writing that looked like it came out of a romantic theater play, or rather, from Jane Austen's **** least that's what they said in the movie.
Am I the only one who noticed that the second act ended up at the end of the movie? The beginning felt like the end, and the end the beginning. The plot would unfold in a deeply exciting way if it weren't for the poor adaptation of the script and organization of the facts. Slow paced, boring and uncreative.
Dakota Johnson carried the few considerations to be made for the film on her back. Brilliant in his performance. She did excellent dialogue with the camera. But unfortunately it was very poorly used with this confusing direction and highly predictable script. Expected more from Cosmo Jarvis' performance, it didn't live up to the height.
Simple photography, no surprises.
For her cultured speeches and her erudite characters, I think the author deserves much more. So I conclude that the book must be really amazing. But with this adaptation they couldn't get very far. It was worth the try, but it was a huge waste of cast and story. A drama without drama. By the way, who is Carrie Cracknell? Rating 5, great for falling asleep.

Jealousy, hopelessness, confusion, uncertainty, despair. Johnson plays those emotions well, and with appropriate class and charisma. She gives a balanced performance amidst the messy tone. Because suddenly, the Fleabag stuff is gone, as the movie gets more and more dramatic. I was left to wonder: Wasn't it just a rom-com a second ago? Persuasion entrusts too much of itself to providence, which means—as said by Anne—it hasn't made up its mind yet.

Despite great performances from cast, this adaptation is junk. American adaptations treat Austen works as light romantic comedies, and this one is almost as egregious at it as the awful 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. But she wrote social satire, not YA romance. It's possible to adapt older works for modern audiences without losing the sensibilities of the original. For example, no Austen heroine would ever swim out into deep water contemplating suicide as they have Anne do here. If you want to see Austen done right, check out the 1995 version of Persuasion. It's much better and actually feels like a Jane Austen story. Also, modern pop music has no place in an Austen adaptation. That was the rotten cherry on top of this pile of garbage.
