Erskine, with her earthy chuckle and precision-tooled comic timing, is the real discovery here. She’s a smutty, sniggering joy in the role and I can’t wait to see what she does next.
Incurable romantics seeking a fresh look at love contemporary-style could do a lot worse than Plus One. This charming little independent film, by the first-time writing-directing team of Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer, also introduces two vibrant new stars in Jack Quaid and Maya Erskine as Ben and Alice.

Saw it won Tribeca's audience award, so I had higher expectations for this indie RomCom, and it exceeded them. I had a blast watching this movie. It's funny, quick, and heartbreaking. Everything you'd want in a RomCom. Excited for the main girl's next film, she was so funny and real. A perfect date movie. Great writing, pacing, bravo to those who made this magic. A fresh break from those Netflix RomCom busts.

Developments give Erskine a chance to play hurt and wounded, and she handles this as beautifully as she does the light comedy. She’s the plus in Plus One.
Maya Erskine is hilarious, which is no surprise, given how funny she is on Hulu’s Pen15.
The movie’s real showcase gold lies in the magnetic appeal of screwball comedy natural Erskine (Hulu’s “PEN15”); she’s a major talent who rightly runs away with the movie, conjuring in the viewer’s head a constellation of wishful star turns to come.
Plus One might be a romcom squarely from the dude’s point of view, but Erskine is the real breakout star here. She’s raunchy and funny, giving the film a loose, wild feeling in its best moments, though it’s too often predictable in its larger beats.
It needed bigger laughs and more of the big, ironic comedy that Erskine can clearly deliver.
In a rough summer for movies so far, this is an absolute breath of fresh air. I mean, how many different ways can you do a rom-com? Haven't we seen it all before? The answer is NO. This is stellar. Eskine is fantastic - never seen her before, and the Quaid kid is certainly good enough to make this work. Kudos to all involved!

Maya Erskine is having a moment. She's the female lead in the new Prime Video movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith (my review) and this 2019 romcom was just released on Netflix. Two of her friends who worked on her popular series PEN15 have directed this. She plays "just friends" with her college bud (Jack Quaid). They decide to pair up for the number of weddings they need to attend. Of course, their relationship goes deeper, but not before a few mildly funny moments. After they get romantic, the comedy disappears and the movie becomes predictable and not especially memorable. Erskine provides what little amusement there is, while Quaid proves a mildly-charming beau. The film started with comic promise, but the plot becomes so predictable that there's nothing left to surprise or even amuse.

Alice is the most annoying unlikable female lead I've ever seen. She has a future in that type of role because she's so good at it without even trying. It's poor casting, the result of checking off the diversity boxes. If you like watching your drunken friend slobber all over everybody then you'll like her and the movie.
