Not every moment in the film works perfectly — Matsoukas, on occasion, slips the actors’ dialogue into internal monologue voice-over, which mostly just seems confusing — but Queen & Slim has a remarkable power. You watch it recognizing the world you know, and wishing you didn’t. Read full review

In Queen’s case, this means a tiger-striped stripper dress and snake-print go-go boots, which she will wear for the rest of the movie. It makes for terrific visuals, but like the sex scene to come it’s not a dignified enough use of this actress, and makes a blaxploitation film out of something that seemed to harbor loftier ambitions. An overwhelming feeling of prescience in the wake of the George Floyd protests as I watched this today. Queen & Slim opens and closes with a poignant message about democide. Queen & Slim opens and closes with a poignant message about democide. This tone soon changes with the sweeter light heated drama between the two lead characters and at points we get dreamlike sequences with humour to balance the more serious material.

I noticed the direction/screenplay was more artistic in interpreting events choosing to focus on the concepts of metamorphosis. There are also moments that use the character dialogue dubbed over characters in the scene rather than showing a beat for beat cinematic action filled journey of a more conventional thriller. Subsequently I often felt too distant from the characters to feel a strong connection beyond the superficial. The editing cuts moved so quickly and in doing so removed any tension which could have built into a more compelling thriller genre piece. An interesting film overall with an excellent soundtrack. Worth checking out.… Expand

A little on the nose at times, but otherwise powerful and poetic. A hard movie to rate as its message is the focal point, and is hard to look away from.

Queen and Slim is a horrible movie. It glorifies violence and crime as virtuous. It also glorifies gratuitous sex and prostitution. It is a wasted two hours of life to see it.
