This is an exceptional movie. It is as much about delicious food / cooking as it is about family conflicts, about star crossed lovers (parents) / different heritage and differences of generations / cultures caused by life experiences. The main appeal is the development of characters, theThis is an exceptional movie. It is as much about delicious food / cooking as it is about family conflicts, about star crossed lovers (parents) / different heritage and differences of generations / cultures caused by life experiences. The main appeal is the development of characters, the story telling and the resolution of the problems at the end. The film shows both side well but could not go into details in some areas (During WW2 the Japanese did horrible things that many people considered worse than the crimes of Nazi Germany; Be warned if you want to look this up, it is truly horrific nightmare material!). The main problem many people will have with the movie is that it looks aimlessly at the beginning and starts slow. This is a reflection of the main character which has to grow and find a meaning / resolve after a blow of fate. Also I will do this movie injustice if I don’t talk about the cooking. This movie makes you hungry and you will most certainly want to try the meals / recipes. Everything looks delicious. The actors are fine. The main actor, his parents and grandmother deliver a flawless performance. All are so believable that you can feel their emotions and dilemmas (internal pain). Overall this is a careful made movie which wants to make a bridge between cultures.… Expand

The story, simple as it is, is very relatable. Family conflicts, maturity, understanding pain and forgiveness. All these seem secondary to all the amazing food shown, but I unlike most critics did not feel that way. All these seem secondary to all the amazing food shown, but I unlike most critics did not feel that way. I personally felt the food was the glue, the cultural bond that we have as humans, on a family themed story where reconnection is achieved via cooking. The main characters may be Japanese and Singaporean, but I can see other cultures learning this way, surpassing anger, grief or hatred this way and in the end food is a common denominator everywhere you go in the world.
The acting was good, not the best, but good. I would say the same for directing and cinematography was very good. The dialogue, specially when directed at food was on point and for all these reasons I am giving this movie 8/10.… Expand
