Darkly comic, delicately tragic, and shot through with genuine pathos - 'Raymond and Ray' is a real treat.
Both McGregor and Hawke seem to be having a nice time with each other. Part road trip movie, part “watch these two knuckleheads do wacky things because of their anger and grief,” they contemplate each other well, to the point I hope they make more movies together.

Ethan Hawke & Ewan McGregor play half-brothers who are brought together by their father's final wish; for them to dig his grave and bury him. This peculiar setup serves to mirror the unpleasant relationship they experienced with him. Hawke & McGregor both turn in nuanced, appealing performances with the rest of the cast matching that quality. Writer/director Rodrigo Garcia has created a film that's intelligent, while being offbeat and predictable at the same time. This is a little gem that can be appreciated for its gentle conflicts and winning performances.

I appreciated a small movie like this. It's been a while since I've seen something this intimate and sans cgi or sensationalism. Just to guys dealing with real **** It was refreshing.

Anchored by two great lead performances, Raymond & Ray is at its best when exploring the odd relationships between its complicated characters.
In the end, Raymond & Ray doesn’t really get to know anyone, merely pushing them toward the inevitable finish line, where they can start their new life chapters with the father who defined them for decades in the rearview mirror.
García’s latest film is a predictable, completely fine, but uneventful dramedy that never quite finds a way to dig itself out of mediocrity.
Garcia holds back too much, perhaps trying to avoid any phony epiphanies. As a result, his two main characters are too preoccupied with re-litigating old grudges to do or say anything notable.
Here is a terribly meagre experience from writer-director Rodrigo García, a silly, pointless movie which never delivers on its promises of drama and comedy and contains not a single funny or believable moment. As a filmic meal, it is pretty much entirely without nutritional or calorific value.

A pointless film about two half-brothers reuniting to bury their father, who was mean to both. Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke's characters talk about their **** life the whole time, but their emotions are nowhere to be found. The rest of the characters are useless, and the "comedy" part of the film doesn't offer laughs at all. I wonder what Alfonso Cuarón — producer — saw in this story to make it happen. These Apple original films are starting to follow the same lame pattern.
