"You need to see this one on the biggest screen possible, and let it wash over you as if you had stepped inside the most incredible video game experience ever created — one in which events in the manufactured universe can have lasting and serious real-world consequences." ... Read full review

"I don’t know how he does it, or for that matter why, but Spielberg turns Ready Player One into something that’s both nostalgic and new, something impersonal yet uniquely his. It is not one of his better movies; it’s probably not even in the top half. It’s way too long and packed with too much extra junk. It is still, somehow, a gas." ... Read full review

"It misses the point to ask, as some have recently, whether he’s still able to have fun at the age and status he has attained. Sure he is. He must have had great fun making this immense Tinker Toy of a movie, but there’s a fundamental mismatch between artist and material." ... Read full review

"With Steven Spielberg behind the camera, Ernest Cline’s book had potential to transcend its source material. It’s disheartening that the finished product is little more than the cinematic equivalent of a pop culture mashup tee, which takes cherished icons of film and coats them in garish CGI while clumsily smashing them against one another like a child playing with action figures." ... I went in withAs you've probably heard mentioned, this movie is Steven Spielberg's adaptation of the Ready Player One novel by Earnest Cline. I went in with closed eyes and watched the movie as if it were standalone and not based on one of my favorite books of all time.

The movie setting was believable; set in a 2044, the technological advances weren't over the top, and very reasonable. The dystopian living areas made sense for the state of the world. Two of the main characters, Parzival and Aech, were introduced in a good fashion. The main character (Wade in real life) was given a brief backstory that allowed us to understand his situation, and his relationship with his cyber friend that he know has Aech. Their backstory was relate-able to anyone whom has every had a friend that they only knew through the internet. The rest of the "high-five" in the movie were introduced very quickly without much mention of where they came from. I would have liked to see a little more development between Parzival and Art3mis before they actually came into contact with each other. The action was very good and the scenes were very well put together. The comedic aspects were great, even from the antagonists.

I found the 80's nostalgia to be more visual than referenced; I won't spoil the Where's Waldo spotting of fun characters.

Overall, the movie is very fun but seemed a little fast paced in regards to the main character development. If you are looking for a replica of the book, you will be mildly disappointed; there are tons of differences. If you go in, like me, expecting to use it as just a reference, you will be in for a great ride.

Not bad I guess.

It's a pretty movie.
Some genuinely funny moments.
It's great to see cyberpunk, video games, and VR represented in a mainstream movie.
Product tie-ins / references are fun.
Acting wasn't bad.
Writing wasn't noticeably bad.

Really strains the limits for suspension of disbelief, both in terms of the technology and the world built in the movie.
Plot is predictable, unoriginal, and shallow.
No real reason to care about any of the characters.
Feels rushed, especially the love story.
Scope is way too big.

Not worth paying movie theater prices.
Probably worth renting at home or watching on Netflix.

Excited to see someone else make a (hopefully good) adaptation of Snow Crash if this movie sells well.
